Post Portland Gun Show Report

Big gun show in Portland this weekend, 1000 tables or so. Quite a few less actually occupied (and lots non-gun). A couple of Usual Suspects not in attendance.

A decent sprinkling of Lugers, many which are repeat entries.

Singletons:
1900AE with Cronin hoster $3.5k a really spectacular gun
1900AE $1.6k good shape
1900AE $2k type2 safety lever, skinny grip safety, really excellent shape
1906AE $1495 decent shape, didn't inspect
byf 41 (wood grips) $825 average shape, didn't inspect
S/42 1937 reblue $700
S/42 G date mismatch $650 or so
S/42 G date. looked good superficially, didn't get price
DWM Commercial .30cal reblue $600
John Martz Baby $2.5k
Finnish contract, matte finish, mismatch, 2 of 'em, $500 each
Mitchell stainless steel, 4", $595

One table had an unusual 1906AE, marked Loaded on the extractor and stamped Gesichert behind the thumb safety lever. In excellent shape, with 3 mags (two good ones) . He wanted $2.7k, probably a good price.

There was a 1916 Erfurt which had been rebarralled with a 16 1/4" barrel, wood forestock attached to the barrel, came with a carbine stock, $895. A real mutant as it sits, too bad, too, because the Erfurt looked to be a good one.

Jerry Kramer was there, as usual the highest quality/highest price selection:
DWM Commercial Artillery $2850
byf 41 Black Widow $2095
byf 42 $1995
1906AE $2695
Krieghoff (didn't catch chamber date) $4495
S/42 K date $1995
DWM 1908 $1950
1906 Swiss $3295
ERMA .22 conversion in box, $895
He also offered me a nearly perfect byf 41 for $1195, a real bargain, I considered it briefly but its not in my direct line of interest. If I had extra money in my pocket, though...

There was one other primarily Luger table, a friend from Longview who is usually a walk-in in Portland. He had the most interesting and varied Luger table in the show.
Started off with a John Martz long-barrelled "Navy Carbine" with carbine stock. $3k
Also had a 1923 Commercial Artillery, a Gale Morgan restoration, $2.2k
1915 Artillery, $1250
DWM 1915 matching shooter, $850
DWM Commercial .30, really nice shape, $850
DWM 6" rebarrel/refinish, $1.4k
He also had a couple of repro Artillery stock rigs, two Artillery stocks w/o leather, a really nice repro Navy stock rig, one drum mag and one "faux" drum mag (the drum is non-functinal, attached to a functioning standard 8-rd.mag.). Anyone who is going to Reno next weekend will probably see some of these.

A couple of the Mausers sold during the morning, it seems like a Luger for shooting in Portland goes for $500-800. I saw one DWM mismatch walk-in who wanted more than anyone will pay him for it.

Ugly gun of the show: a nickel-plated C-96 Bolo. I dunno, my eye can accept the concept of a nickel-plated Luger, but a broomhandle, or a P-38 as I was shown the other day, just strike me as wrong.

But i digress. All-in-all not a bad show for Lugers, with more non-garden variety than usual.

Well Dwight, that sounds like a heck of a show and a very good report!

I wish I could have been there, but my head hurts from all the great knowledge I picked up the last two days and I had a good time.

Still, it sounds like the Portland show is a good one. Is the December show any good?

The Portland gun shows--Rose City Gun Collectors--in the Expo Center are pretty consistent.

Question

Dwight,
Was the K-Date S/42 a dog or pretty good gun?

The K date is the first variation with script-S on all the parts, and is an excellent sample--approaching 95% or so. Jerry only sells the highest-quality Lugers (he has the disturbing habit of parting out Lugers which are not fine guns )

That would be an unusual Luger! I think you meant that the extractor was marked "Loaded". A "Gesichert" marked 1906 AE is a very early production '06 Eagle, probably in the 25,1xx serial number range with a long frame. One theory is that are that they were made using up left-over 1906 Navy commercial frames. Quite a scarce and desirable Luger.

D'oh! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> Thanks, Ron, for pointing that out, yes, its Loaded/Gesichert, my fingers got the better of my brain on that one. It is a long frame, serial# 281xx.
