Default Idea of cost on a matching Navy in poor condition?

I realy want to own a original matching Navy ( maybe many do!) Yet most I find are of better grade and start in the $4,000and up tange. I never have seen a 'lower quaility mayching Navy for sale. I wouls be pleanty happy to come across a poor condition Navy with 60% finish with some pitting just to own a original. I know many Navies were changed after WW1 and maybe the Navies that avoided this were more 'personal' Lugers that were never turned in. Just a thought.
Thanks,Bill

Bill,

Even a 50% all matching and original Imperial Navy is going to cost $2000+, maybe closer to $2500.

From what I see at auctions, the ugly matching ones start @$3500+. TH

My trouble is that I could be easily faked out by some of these repo Navies. I would rather buy from a forum member or have a forum look at a few pictures and get a opinon. That is fine with Online auctions and Luger online shops like Simpsons, but stuck with my own judgement if I find one at a local gunshow.

Imperial Navy Lugers are a minefield, if you're not complelely knowledgable as to the minute red flags.

There are some boosters who have become experts at fakery. It takes a trained eye and a microscope to pick them out. And there are a ton of them floating around.

Good Luck...

Thanks Ron, but it makes my sprit drop. As with military badge collecting, so many fakes, repos now I've quit collecting. Now that there is no longer a East Germany, some of the old WW2 German badge original tooling was found there and now some of these "new"badges are so exact that long time collectors are fooled. With the same tooling/dies, no wonder. I am told it is the metal content that gives the new one away.

Bill,

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but it's the way things are. I'm not saying don't. I'm just saying make damned sure.

Back when I first started seriously collecting. I found a nice Imperial Navy on a reputable dealer's site. I almost jumped, but decided to do some serious inquiring first.

It was a fake, and later saw it on the same dealer's site described as a "well done fake", at a much lower price. Evidently someone had brought the error to their attention.

Tom Armstrong "Navy" has an excellent "sticky" at the top of the Navy Luger section, on what to avoid and what to look for.

Jasta,
If you are serious about acquiring a Navy, I suggest you try to find one from the Reichsmarine (Weimar-era). For reasons that elude me, these guns are greatly under valued and bargains can be found if you are dilligent.

I am serious. It's finding a Navy that does not cost a arm and leg. I guess that means $5k+

Bill,

There you go. If you want assurance of authenticity. FGS is the place.
