unit marking on a DWM1915
Hello, I have a matching 1915 DWM with
R.M.G.83.267 (crossed) 197 (over the 267). Can someone translate that unit marking for me? is it MachineGun Regiment??? Thanks in advance. |

It means 83d Machine Gun Regiment, weapon number (was 267) now 197. If I understand what you mean by crossed, are the numbers x'd out?

Hello, thanks for your answer, yes, the numbers are x'd out.
Is it interesting as marking, a Machinegun marking? |

I don't want to classify them as 'rare' but neither are they common. A lot of Erfurts have them as well as others. The MG designation is fairly common among the unit marked ones as there were a lot of machinegunners at that time, and are usually found on the 1908 to 1914 unit marked Lugers. It has been estimated that about 15% of Lugers of that era were unit marked. Unit marked Lugers will command a higher price than one just like it that is unmarked. Following 1914 estimates are that only 1% of Lugers were unit marked thereby making yours more valuable than one of the previous years. (Estimates taken from Jeff Knoll's "The Imperial German Regimental Marking) revised edition.

To 7.92x57 and Herb. Your translation is close. I would love to see a jpg of the marking to be sure of the last number but I am fairly confident that it translates to: Infantry Regiment 83, Machine Gun Company, Weapon 197 (previously Weapon 267). I would like to add your gun to my data base. Would you supply the serial number? http://home.earthlink.net/~nopubl
