1908 ??
Sn, 40697 rt. side not marked l. side of rec. marked crown over B and crown over U sideways. It has hold open but no proof mark like when added later. Bug under bbl. with sn. and 118.35. 40697 on receiver front and under bbl. not marked Germany, sn. on all parts but safety, firing pin or extractor. No sn. inside of grips, hole in receiver near trigger for mag. safety but no mag. safety. fireing pin is fluted with tool marks inside of grove, not smooth like my other lugers. It also has a sear safety.
blueing is very good and bbl is lightly pitted. I think it is a 1908 commercial with sear safety and mag safety added later. Thank you Bill E. |

In that serial range, it could be. Pictures would help.

Appears to be a 1908 Commercial as you surmised. Does the side plate have a number on the lower surface or is it a replacement?

Your pistol has a police Sear Safety! Also, it looks like the hold open was added in the photos, but the usual proof that accompanies the feature is not visible.
Does the pistol have a hold open and is there a tiny proof above and to the left of the trigger pivot pin on the right side of the pistol? |

Brite lite and a magnifying glass show absolutely no proof mark.

From 1908 to police service and later- it was likely refinished once and maybe twice, so a light strike Erfurt mark could likely have been lost in the process.
The hold open was definitely added after the factory, as evidenced by the rough visible pin.

c/B,U,G proofed commercial pistols appropriated for police use are very uncommon. It is interesting that sn 40666 is also a police pistol.

Thank you,
A lite shined at an acute angle shows no proof mark, and the inside is not blued like a dipped hot blue job> |
