Some years ago, I was shooting my "shooter" Luger at an indoor range. I fired a round and something went whizzing past my head!! A hunk of the cocking piece knob! Cheap lesson.

was this an east german rework luger ?
number is in an odd location

perhaps the axle worked loose and then toggle slapped down with the protruding axle between the rear toggle ear and the receiver top mating surface ? maybe receiver would have had some matching damage in that case.

congratulations on your good luck in this instance !

on ebay years ago someone offered a rear toggle that had broken in half at the center of the flat area and looked like was on the line for the coupling link to toggle pin
and someone bought it.

my guess is that it broke after ejecting the case and when slamming down into the receiver.

The broken off part looks more worn on the 'upper part' on the picture, this may indicate that it has been hitting the receiver unevenly. Perhaps due to a missmatch between the location of the hole for the rear toggle link pin and the height of the rear toggle link. Just a thought..

Was it a matching gun? Is there a dent in the receiver?

Some other theories would be that the rear roggle link pin was too small, headspace wrong, too large bolt punched in between rear and middle toggle link, +P ammo.. It could be a lot of things. The important thing is that you came out of it ok

And the granular structure shown at the fracture is indicative of a casting...Also, the edges ot the sight are rounded, not sharp as they would be on a machined part...The "machined" surfaces look more like a filed surface...All under the blued finish...

A part machined from bar stock or a forging would not look like this...
