Hurricane Time!

I never care about replaceables like furniture but my lugers, books and leather scares me. Every year living on Florida's east coast we too are vulnerable, I offer suggestions and welcome all of yours! I will review prior posts! and make them with current ideas!! All thoughts or suggestions please share them! None of us are immune! Insurance is worthless in protecting our second love! We can lose our lives' passions and history in one storm or worse two!

Maybe...but where? Parched and toasted on the left coast, nowhere anywhere near any ocean is obviously out. Siberia's having a heat wave. The last storm that marched North brought a lot of rain to NYS. It wasn't enough to cause widespread flooding, but it was delivered quite violently--uprooting trees like carrots from the garden, etc. Plus there was a tornado on the opposite side of town.

I've heard about people who buy decommissioned missile silos and turn them into cozy places to weather just about anything...

A few precautions are what I'm suggesting. I have a few tupperwarre rubber boxes. I put a luger in a white cotten sock. Place the gun into a gallon ziplock, seal the rubbermade box, seal with duct tape and sleep well! With no AC, humidity is as deadly!

Just make sure you place a Silica Desiccant Moisture Absorber inside any enclosure bro.

Your white cotton socks will soak up moisture, so use non-fabric gun rugs. TH

I agree. I use Bore Stores gun socks. They don't retain moisture. They are fabric, but they are synthetic fabric.

Getting a real safe will set you back 5 to 10 grand but is probably worth it living on the cost.
Weather is why I chose upstate South Carolina. I love the coast but I would hate evacuations.

In interior Alaska, we don't really have any natural disasters to worry about. (Other than the occasional million acre wildfire). But, that being said, I would use my foodsaver and vacuum pack my handguns, after a light spray down with a good rust preventative, and then put them in the large 20mm ammo cans. They seal well against moisture by themselves, as they have a good rubber gasket around the lid. Ziplocs can leak. Foodsavers are pretty air and watertight. Just like packaging mooseburger for the freezer.

I'm also a fan of the vacuum sealing approach for long-term storage, or perhaps in preparation for a natural disaster that risks having them bobbing around in a flooded house. I'd also put a package of silica gel desiccant. The ammo can is good insurance, too.

Born and raised in California - I *DETEST* hurricane season here in Florida. Every single friggin' year! I'll take an earthquake any day over hurricanes/tornadoes.

If it were up to me, I'd live *AT LEAST* 200 miles - preferably further - from any ocean and *AT LEAST* 2,500 ft elevation.

I think the last two years were the first time that 'tornados' actually/officially touched down here in [Western, central] New York State. I just noticed this morning that the local news station ["Spectrum", used to be Time-Warner, I think) has a probability of hurricane on the weather screen, along with rain, hail, wind, whatever. That's new; they never had 'hurricane' before.

That does not fill me with optimism.
