Default "8" Stamping on frame

I have a badly beat up, all matching 1916 Erfurt, #353c. On the back of the frame, above the lanyard loop is an 8 stamped on it. Anyone know what this means?

This is generally refered to as a "rack Number". In stead of numbering the pistols with the full unit ID on the front grip strap, appearantly some units just stamped them on the rear of the frame in numerical order so that they could be accounted for and inventoried while still in the storage racks.
