Bob, conclusions are hard to reach here without actually examining the gun. This issue is not even mentioned in Gibson's book and not one picture in the book, as I recall, shows the right side of any of the Krieghoff examples. Since these HK's are so pricey,an interested party has to have a hands on look in bright light. I find it hard to believe that the factory would make a frame without the holdopen but in the frame discussion part of the book, there seems to be some controversy as to whether Krieghoff made all their frames. This is an expensive question that may never be answered. If you end up with this piece would you be so kind to give us your conclusions?

The hold open pin was a press fit (possibly hot pressed). There are several reasons it could have loosened.

It is unlikely that anyone would have retrofitted a pin unless the old pin was broken. If that is the case, this example is a clumsy repair.

I added a question to you in the other thread, Bob.

I also added a pic of the 2mm pin center-peened in the magazine well wall.

Just a curious machining practice, IMHO.

My 1939 Mauser Luger was center-peened as shown in the pic.

John has a plausible explanation! We, these days, think of faking, boosting, etc. This all could have been an honest though poor job.

Is it really that bad???

If the pin has drifted into the magazine well, which would show that outer circle, then I think it would be a poor job...The outer end of the pin is on a curved surface, hard to match without time-consuming work...For 1942, with the P38 replacing the Luger, is it really all that unusual???
