Post 4" 0r 6"?

Hello all!

I am very close to ordering one of the new stainless Lugers(I currently own no Luger of any type)and I have a question for any of the members here who are lucky enough to own both a 4" barreled one and a 6" one or have at least fired both. I know that the 6" barrel will provide a longer sight radius, but my question is does the 6" barrel when compared to the 4" one have any less barrel flip or felt recoil when fired?

I have always prefered the look of the 4" over the 6", but lately the 6" look has been growing on me, so if it does indeed have less flip when fired I may well purchase the 6".

Thanks in advance for any help or advice sent my way.

John.

Don't have one, but my 2 cents.

4 inch barrel, classic look

6 inch barrel, feels great in the hand!

Flip is in the eye of the beholder. I think for accuracy's sake, the inherent advantages of a longer sight radius much outweighs the effect of muzzle flip (unless of course you are trying to shoot a tight 5-shot group in under two seconds)

Gave 3 six inchers to relatives as gifts some years ago...they are tack drivers.

Hey Tom, are you sure I'm not a cousin or some other kin deserving of such a gift? I have a few tacks that are in dire need of driving.

I like the looks of the 6" better than 4". I do not have a 4" but my 6" stainless is much more accurate than my skill. From a rest, I get very tight groups but not so good freehand.

I had feeding problems but asked the factory what ammo they used for testing and they sent an empty S&B box back. It is available at most gun shows in my area for $5.00-$5.50 per 50 and functions flawlessly.

IMO, the 4 3/4" 1906 slender barrel is THE "Classic" Luger barrel but in close second is the 6". To my eye, the 6" is better proportioned to the frame size than the 4".

For looks alone, I like a 4 3/4 or 5 inch barrel. For sight radius the 6 inch wins. I've never noticed any significant difference in perceived recoil or barrel flip in 4, 5, or inch. The six inch offers around 70 to 100 fps more velocity than the 4 inch. From a machine rest there will be no difference in accuracy.

i have several 30's and 9mm's in both 4" & 6" as well as 8" and a 12". I definitely prefer the 6" when it comes to serious Armadillo gunfights!

Thanks to all that answered!

I have an ad. in the November 21, 2003 GUN LIST magazine under "Luger Wanted". I am looking for a NIB stainless, Mitchell, Stoeger, or AIMCO. The only caller so far has a NIB Mitchell 4" barreled one, which is fine with me except he wants more than "Blue Book" which is what I am trying to find one for. FYI-I most want to find a NIB Stoeger.

My real question here though is he says that it includes an option item which is a leather holster made by Mitchell for this Luger. I have never heard of this item which he says at the original purchase was about $40.00 extra as best as he can remember. I don't need it, but I don't think he'll sell the Luger without it. Is it worth $40.00, much more today, or nothing?

I am not a collector, I just want a modern stainless for shooting fun.

Thanks for any help on this.

John.

John,

I recently purchased a NIB Stoeger 6" for $700 off of one of the auction sites.

I noticed very little difference in recoil compared to other 9mm autos I have fired.

The accuracy of the 6" is amazing and IMHO is worth having. The only problem I have found thus far is the rear sight. Since it is shiney stainless I get a glint off of it. I think I need to give it the "lamp black" treatment before the next time I go to the range.

I don't know how Orimar can make these pistols for the price that they sell for. These guns are complex and have alot of hand finishing that goes into them. The grips on mine look to be of Claro or English Walnut. Not a bad deal when you compare this to a modern plastic injected automatic.

Dean,

Welcome to the stainless club! I am glad that you like yours. I certainly do both of mine. Lamp black or a black Sharpie pen should help on the rear sight. I took a small round file to mine and changed it from a V to a U shape. You may or may not want to do this since it is a one way change and the blackening is only teporary.

Again, welcome to club of stainless steel Luger owners.

Steve

John, have you considered a new one from the now re-named AIMCO ? The price difference between a NIB used and a real NIB isn't that much ?

It would certainly give you the option of picking the style you really like.

I have only seen pictures of the holster but it looked pretty cool with the Luger logo in a "metal" attachment on the flap. It may be real metal of some sort for all I know. For $40.00 I would get it. I also read somewhere that the same holster will work with 4" or 6" depending on how the flap was attached with it its velcro strip. But as I said, I have not seen one and only one picture and a couple of written descriptions but $40.00 sounds great to me.

I saw this ad at http://www.sturmgewehr.com/webBBS/se...cgi?read=77680 and thought someone might be interested as the price seems reasonable.

Hello and Happy New Year to all,

I bought a stainless. Christmas gift to myself. It is a NIB Mitchell 9mm, 4 inch. I have not fired it yet. S&B ammo on order. I am very happy with it, so nice looking. Just hope it goes bang as it should and with no problems.

Thanks to all of you that provided help and advice. As I stated in my first post of this string, this is my first Luger of any type, and I finally feel that I am now a real member of this fine forum.

Regards,
John.

Way to go John. I am sure you'll enjoy it. I still think you should have gone with the 6" barrel tho
