Could you please post a couple of closeups of the Navy?

The photo upload link if you need it, is on the left frame at our homepage www.lugerforum.com...and the instructions for use are pretty simple... if you have a problem, just ask...

thanks,

DWM Navy luger. 200 meter rear sights. matching except for side plate. Reworked, reblued, stock lug ground, rear sight ears were ground down just leaving a slight V to sight with. Export marked Germany. Not a collector's piece, just a shooter.
But I did not join this talk board to sell a gun, just trying to add to my limited knowledge of lugers. Can anyone tell me why they ground down the stock lug and sight on this gun? I've seen more than one with the stock lug ground off. I at first thought it had something to do with meeting Versaille Treaty requirements. But maybe import laws?

Welcome! Who is the kid with the byf44 sniper? (I’m thinking maybe your son.) Quite the striking Hitler Youth re-enactor there, LOL. Also, what do you mean by a “dished out” bolt handle?

Also, have you ever test fired this AC44 K43 you have for sale on your site? I can just see springs and pieces of the fired pin flying out when that thing goes off.

many stock lugs were ground off of guns imported after the two world wars because of misinterpretation of the National Firearms Act of 1934... they ground them off to be sure they wouldn't be in violation by possessing half of a short barreled rifle...

Too bad.

Yea, kid is my son. Bolt on sniper had half moon cut out of top of bolt handle to clear scope. I've seen this more than once. Didn't get a chance to shoot K43 before I sold it. Wish I could shoot them all, but then I wouldn't have time to work. I'd be at the range every day. But it is fun, one advantage of owning a gun shop. When I get the chance to go to the range, I can grab all kinds of fun stuff to take with me.

Terri:

Hope you enjoy looking over the vast information here in the forum. I only own one Luger, but I find the general information about collecting to be helpful. Also, I don’t have to pay for the extremely expensive Luger source books, I just post the question and hopefully one of the experts jumps in.

You’ve piqued my interest in your son’s sniper rifle. I’ve seen many real and faked German WW2 snipers, but never one with a “half moon” cut out of the bolt handle to clear the scope. Even though this is a high turret mount, all of the bolt handles have this appearance to my experience:

I don’t have Law’s book on sniper variants of the K98k rifle with me now, but I should caution you that the double claw mount is about the most commonly faked German sniper out there. These were known to go to SS units, and thus they are routinely faked for super high resale. Here is a pic of a Sarco reproduction double claw mount:

Watch out for this fakery equipment. Is there any way you could post a picture of the bolt handle in question? I can also answer some of the questions posted on your Web site under the “German Weapons” section. The manufacturing code ax on a 98k receiver means it was made at the Erfurt factory of Feinmechanische Werke. One of your posters asked where he could buy a 98k online. Here are two links:

http://www.samcoglobal.com/rifles.html#m98kmc

http://www.interordnance.com/Merchan...Code=K98+RI-HS

I hope the moderators don’t mind me posting all these Mauser rifle-related issues. I for one, have a keen interest in all things related to German WW2 militarism.

I just wanted to mention a great book I just finished. It is called "War of the rats" It is about the duel between Russia's best sniper against the german's best sniper and takes place in Stalingrad. It is based on a true story and shows some of the tactics used by either side. There is a movie out also but as usual doesn't do the book justice.

Heydrich, (and everyone else)

No moderator on this forum will ever jump on you or anyone else for providing helpful information on any topic that has been requested... if what you are posting is off topic... just preface it with the off-topic icon <img src="graemlins/offtopic.gif" border="0" alt="[offtopic]" /> so folks don't have to read in detail if they are only looking for Luger info... The off-topic icon looks a little meaner than I would prefer, but it came free with the discussion board software... so feel free to use it. Maybe one of these days I will have some spare time and will revise it or add a new one with a smile...

If you start an off topic thread, then place [OT] in the subject line before the actual subject. I know those that access the forum via a slow dial-up line will really appreciate not having to go to a thread they might not be interested in, only to have to wait for the previous page to reload when they find out...

All I know about my son's gun is that a friend bought at a Houston gunshow in a Navy Arm's marked box that was serial numbered to the rifle.BYF 44 code. Had scope bases, but no rings or scope. It was in a hardwood stock, stamped floorplate and trigger housing, cup buttplate, milled front band. The gun was matching even though it looked like a hodge podge of parts. I would swear they were orignal numbers, not reworked. The guy that sold this gun had K98's stacked up in Navy Arms boxes. They were $179, even this one with the bases. Found a scope and rings. So right or wrong, it doesn't matter. Gun was cheap,so I restocked it to look better, just something for my kid to take out and beat up. <img src="graemlins/offtopic.gif" border="0" alt="[offtopic]" />

Hermit:

The two snipers in question were Vassili Zietsev on the Soviet side, and Major Koenig on the German side. And the movie you are thinking about is called Enemy at the Gates. A very good movie, but I thought the end was preposterous when Koenig (played by Ed Harris, in a very chilling role) ventured out into no-man’s land like a greenie just to look around like some yahoo. Something a real WW2 German sniper would never have done. I’ll try not to spoil the rest for anyone who has not seen this outstanding film.
