Silencer Adapter

A friend of mine in Europe ran across a few of these and I was able to acquire one.

Does anyone have a clue as to who they were made for? They are marked GERMANY so I suppose for export?

The Norwegians come to mind, any other theories?

I have it attached to a "shooter" EG reworked Luger I own. It also fits on some P.38 barrels.

Hello.

Someone has manufactured these for the past year or two in Europe. They are sold here and there for about 50€.
I don`t know if they are the real thing. You can get them for P08, P38, nagant...
Never seen a silencer.

Probably not a silencer adapter. More likely used for a sub-caliber (.22:LR) barrel insert and conversion kit.

(But..... After reviewing the comments below, and looking up references, I have to agree with John et. al...)

I would have to agree with MarkC. The design of these is more closely appropriate to a silencer, not a .22 barrel adapter...

A .22 adapter would likely have threads on the barrel that when the nut is tightened on the outside of the barrel it would draw the barrel tightly into the chamber like the standard Erma conversion unit. This device attaches securely to the end of the barrel by securing itself to the front sight base. The end threads are external for attaching something to the end... hence, a silencer adapter.

The external threads also dramatically reduce the possibility that this device was a cleaning rod guide...

I doubt this because of the external(male) threads? Still, would be interesting in a collection.

Your fitting is for a silencer. Here is one fitted to a P-38. And a better solution by just putting threads on a barrel. This is another fitting being sold on ebay:

The images you reference are for silencer adapters and can be purchased at CMR Classic Firearms www.cmrfirearms.com. Last time I looked, they were125usd. And, they are like ww2 era. Only problem, these adapters are for .30 luger caliber barrels only. Now, I have the real deal for my 9mm lugers that I bought from DAQ Couplers. What you see here is a DAQ coupler that has a 5/8-11 thread. That’s the only thread available. Then, there is a 5/8-11 to ½-28 adapter. Then there is the YHM Cobra suppressor. I have purchase these couplers from DAQ earlier and had Kenneth Stuteville at Sniper’s Hide re-cut the thread to ½-28. But, Kenneth has drop-off the Hide’s forums and doesn’t answer his emails. I still plan to have these threads re-cut so I don’t need the middle adapter. (DAQ - Closeout of P-38 & Luger couplings with 5/8-11 threads. $25. each. www.muzzlecouplings.com)
The photo's shown above were found on the net. I've seen them around for years.
And, surprisingly, the sights just clear the top of the suppressor.

Does all this extra weight affect function? Seems a similar situation to the Carbine, when considering the overall weight of the upper, which is effectively increased by these attachments. IIRC, the early Carbines had a spring inside the fore-stock to help return the upper to battery, and they were supposed to use special ammo. I don't think the commercial Carbines from the 20s had that feature or requirement...?

No, the luger action works just fine with 147 gr FMC - Magtech (sub-sonic). The YHM silencer has a Nielsen device (recoil booster) which acts as an inertial damper. Runs okay on my 1918 DWM 4" barreled P08 without any jams or misfires.

Here's the real reason I would NOT recommend suppressing a luger: they are loud. Much louder than the platform I regularly use, the Sig 229. Hardly worth the effort. There are heavy forces on the adapter and I have had the locking ring jump ship on occasion, although with no damage to the baffles. -- just the cool factor going for you here, but don't expect much in the sound reduction department. One additional point, with the original .30 cal adapters, they are spring loaded at the muzzle attachment point. That may help reduce the forces on the locking ring.
And, there is the little matter of the blue wear at the attachment point, something to consider.

I recently saw similar devices for at a militaria show in Belgium. When asked the vendor claimed they were throat protection to be used when cleaning the bore. The prices ranged from $30 - 50.

In my opinion these are recent fantasy pieces, not based on any historical items. A load of muzzle protectors with obviously faked eagle/swastika markings was dumped on the market a few years ago. Probably from the same source and just as fake.

These adaptors use to be made by DAQ during the 1980s. He use to advertise in Shotgun News. Quackenbush air gun fame dependent. I believe if memory serves me right that his 1st name is Denis?
