navy or artillery?

I was handed down a luger from my greatgrandfather and am trying to figure out what it is.I posted on the comercial thread and was told it is either a navy or artillery. could anyone help determine which?also trying to get some sort of idea what it may be worth. not thinking to sell, thinking more about insuring it.

Images need to be put on by clicking on your posting, then ADVANCED then go down below to manage ATTACHMENTS and then choose the pictures - don't bother trying to use the attach image above it works, but only for some purposes.

Chris,
It is neither an artillery or navy. It is a 1920 "Alphabet" Commercial, so-called because the "i" is actually part of the serial number (i.e. the serial number of your gun is 7913i). In post-war commercial production the method of serial numbering the commercial guns was changed from the previous 5-digit format to the military style 4-digits and a lower case alphabet character. The Crown over N proof indicates that it is commercial rather than military. It is .30 caliber (7.65mm Parabellum) rather than 9mm. As you have been told in the other thread, the stock is of the artillery configuration and must not be attached to this gun as that is illegal under BATFE rules.

ok that helps, thank you. was told on other thread it was navy or artillery. how would one find out the age, where it was made , ball park worth? could anyone recommend a source to find such things out?

There is some confusion here.

Chris, when you were advised that it "has to be either Navy or Artillery", the statement was in regards to what a pistol would "have to be" in order to qualify for the BATFE exemption concerning the mounting of a butt stock to it. This has nothing to do with its configuration/what variation your pistol is. Everyone's advice so far has been correct, although some could have been more clearly expressed; so there is no conflict.

Its worth is around a thousand dollars, I'd say, and I hope I haven't missed some detail about it. If you need to insure it, go to http://www.simpsonltd.com/index.php?cPath=179 and find an "Alphabet Commercial" in similar condition for price/comparison. Simpson Ltd prices generally run higher than in the collector arena, but some find the extra money worth it in terms of dealing with a very reputable seller which stands behind their wares.
