For those that didnt see this beauty on Jan Still's forum. Someone removed the finish with Naval Jelly then pawned it. My client picked it up and I restored it. The oblique picture really emphasizes the long barrel.

I am so glad to see a 1914 Erfurt restored! I have seen several poorly stored ones over the last few years that needed some tender care.

You really do good work!

Another "zombie thread" come back to life!

Naval Jelly is basically phosphoric acid, it "etches" the surface in addition to dissolving any rust. Of course where the rust was, leaves a depression or pit.

So yes, the naval jelly caused the rough surface.

If you leave NJ on steel/iron long enough it will pit it even more, and it always leaves some degree of iron phosphate coating on the surface.

Most folks recommend Naval Jelly for yard tools, and to keep it far away from a firearm- especially a luger. JMHO.

I am sure Don is correct. My client found the Luger in this state, BEFORE pictures were taken from the display case it was sold out of I think.
