Best Luger Shot You Have Ever Made!!

Hi:

Let me start this one off.

With a 1917 Weimar Police DWM:

Dead center bull at a rifle target at 100 yards, first shot! Second and third shot grouped 2 inches from the first.

shooting in the lane next to two of Louisiana's finest State Police yesterday. I always take a magic marker, make six circles about 4" in diameter on the back of target papers. They're shooting mansize targets and grouping mansize groups. I'm 8 rounds in one 4" groups at 25 yrds, then another, and another and it's an off day, but all are getting in the circles. One fine officer leans over to see what super duper target pistol I'm using and doesn't recognize, nor know, that what I've got there is a c96/16 courtesy of LugerDoc and a blackwidow care of MauserLuger. With shoulder stock, the c96/16 is printing 1 hole groups of 10 rounds each, the black widow is printing 2" to 3" groups of 8 rounds each offhand. These are not my every day shooters... I think they will be annual events. When I got out my sig226 and HK Tactical, then I got down to "bidness". Damn, I never thought I would consider law enforcement "kids", but neither had ever seen a "Luger in person" and neither knew what a "broom" was. What is this next generation coming to? and I'm only 40...

The Luger's rear sight is just like the original military sight on a Mauser rifle. They are for very fine, and thus, accurate, shooting. I must admit that my 47 year old eyes have to work at it a bit, but with glasses for distance, I'm still fine.

Some years ago in Utah two friends and I were hunting tin cans at an informal dumping site. We spotted a pheasant about 50 yards downhill. My buddies proceeded to empty a 44 Mag, a 357 mag, and a cap and ball revolver at it without results. The bird stayed put, presumably due to shell shock. I then pulled out my 7.65 Parabellum and nailed it on the first shot.

Absolutely centered shot a soda size can with the first round at 73 paced off yards. Target shooting: Lugers have given me 1 1/2 in groups @ 50 yds from a 1900AE & a 5 in shooter. Both in 30 Cal. 9mm Lugers do not approach this kind of accuracy for me. Only gun to beat this is a M29 4 inch that does 3/4 in @ 50 yd....a keeper I would say!

Hunting: a woochuck shot at 80+yds with a 10mm Delta Elite....a while back...sure enough those 180 Sierra HP did a great job...sadly, pistol had to go one day...

Quick observation of mine is that 30 Cal Lugers seems to shoot A LOT BETTER than 9mm pistols!

BRAVO!!! I hope that you then blew the smoke out of the barrel and went on your way, laughing inside of course!!!

The best shot of my life was with a 1909 Mauser Rifle. I shot a nasty black bird out of a dead oak tree at about 200 yards, open sights, naturally. I just stood there and looked at the Mauser in astonishment!

I could once and often did, print 1 MOA groups with my BNZ 43 k98k and my Remington 1903 with iron sites at 2, 3, 500 and occasionally 1,000 yards. I'm afraid those days are gone and my eyesight just can't do it, even with glasses. I've gotten spoiled with optics on my rifles and big fat target sights on my pistols. It is almost trite, but Lugers are extremely accurate and suffer from military sites (as do most all military pistol from the 1st half of the 20th century).

Hi Guys:

Here is another one.

My dad, a Paratrooper in the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion in WWII loved the Luger. He always carried one in those baggy jump trousers.

One week, food rations were short because the troops had outrun the supply lines serving them. Being a county boy, Dad sought local game to supplement the rations.

Seeing a Red Elk at a distance of some 150 yards, Dad fired one off and dropped the animal in its tracks. The Elk had been hit in the head, directly behind the ear. The troops ate well that night!!

can, first shot put it in the air, the next 4, kept it there. No, I have not been able to duplicate this. This was with my S/42 "G" date
with a handload 4.2 Gr. Bullseye 115 Gr.Hornady XTP, Federal Cases Winchester Primers.

Not counting years of target shooting with 1911's and S&W Model 41's decades ago... my best pistol shot would have to have been a 3 shot group of about 8 inches on a piece of typing paper stapled to the bottom of a 5.56mm ammo crate at a measured 125 yards... the weapon? My TDE .44 Automag with iron sights... NO it was not done rapid fire

and the next two shots missed the target completely after I looked into the spotting scope and discovered that I actually WAS hitting the paper... I had just estimated the Kentucky windage...and fired three shots without looking...

Some years ago in Arizona I first went hunting with a handgun and no rifle. My hunting buddies laughed. I made a down hill shot at a javalina running broadside at about 50 yards With a S&W 29. I put a cast bullet between two ribs, through all the cartilage on top of the heart and out between two ribs. The javaline collapsed in the space of three feet. I didn't spoil so much as two ounces of meat. It was a young boar that dressed out to 36 lb which is fairly good sized for Arizona. (The Texas contingent will tell you they get bigger.) My buddies with rifles had nothing to show.

My buddies had nothing to SHOW. They had plenty to say over the beer! They didn't laugh the next time I said I was taking my revolver.

All this was before handgun hunting began to get really popular. (Am I giving away my age?) I got free beer by using my S&W 29 to best a guy with a 30-06 on paper in camp the day before opening. Case of he hadn't even bothered to make sure his scope was sighted in versus I had been practicing with the S&W 29 at 100 yards on a regular basis. This used to be a sucker bet if you could find a guy you were sure hadn't had his rifle out of the closet all year.

1972-75: Free beer using a flintlock T.C. Hawken. Had to run a few times as these were my highschool years and some of these country boys wern't too good in the area of sportsmanship. This rifle would put two or three in the same hole at 100yds. I still remember how proud and confident they were and chuckle. I'm 46 now and can't follow through with a flintlock like that anymore. I had long hair and a '65 Dodge van, that with half flat tires, could outdo F150's in sugersand as long as I didn't turn tight. This was the groves and piney woods of Orange Co. Fla. They arn't there anymore. It was wonderful....

Not necessarily my best, but most amusing. I was checking the sights on my Antelope Rifle (M77 Ruger 25-05) before a hunting trip. From the bench at 200 yards at a formal rifle range the first shot was "plugged" about an inch high centered right to left. The next shot got a "Maggy's Drawers". And the next, and the next and so on. After 10 shots, the range officer came over and suggested I quit wasting ammo since I wasn't even on the target after the first shot. I asked the range officer to ask the guy pulling targets to check the plug. Sure enough there were nine littles holes in plug. The guy pulling targets was so impressed, he called a cease fire so he could run the plug up to the shooting bench!! We all had a good laugh!!

Had a similar experience as yours. My coworker was a blowhard hunter with a scoped .308. He was very proud of his abilities and challenged me to a lunch hour contest at a local range thinking he was unbeatable. His choice was a smallbore target at 100 yards, one shot. My gun was an iron sighted Ruger SA .44 magnum.

I was up first while he was snickering. I stood up and fired an offhand shot using a two hand hold. It hit the 9 ring about 2" from the center (dang lucky shot I admit). After looking at the hole through the spotting scope, he refused to shoot--he suddenly had to attend a very important meeting. He never bragged again (to my face anyway).

My TDE .44 Automag with iron sights... NO it was not done rapid fire and the next two shots missed the target completely after I looked into the spotting scope and discovered that I actually WAS hitting the paper... But since you're off topic anyway... Some years ago in Arizona I first went hunting with a handgun and no rifle. My hunting buddies laughed. I made a down hill shot at a javalina running broadside at about 50 yards With a S&W 29. I put a cast bullet between two ribs, through all the cartilage on top of the heart and out between two ribs. The javaline collapsed in the space of three feet. I didn't spoil so much as two ounces of meat. It was a young boar that dressed out to 36 lb which is fairly good sized for Arizona. (The Texas contingent will tell you they get bigger.) My buddies with rifles had nothing to show.

They didn't laugh the next time I said I was taking my revolver. All this was before handgun hunting began to get really popular. (Am I giving away my age?) I got free beer by using my S&W 29 to best a guy with a 30-06 on paper in camp the day before opening. Case of he hadn't even bothered to make sure his scope was sighted in versus I had been practicing with the S&W 29 at 100 yards on a regular basis. This used to be a sucker bet if you could find a guy you were sure hadn't had his rifle out of the closet all year.

Had to run a few times as these were my highschool years and some of these country boys wern't too good in the area of sportsmanship. This rifle would put two or three in the same hole at 100yds. I still remember how proud and confident they were and chuckle. I'm 46 now and can't follow through with a flintlock like that anymore. I had long hair and a '65 Dodge van, that with half flat tires, could outdo F150's in sugersand as long as I didn't turn tight. This was the groves and piney woods of Orange Co. Fla. They arn't there anymore. It was wonderful....

I was checking the sights on my Antelope Rifle (M77 Ruger 25-05) before a hunting trip. From the bench at 200 yards at a formal rifle range the first shot was "plugged" about an inch high centered right to left. The next shot got a "Maggy's Drawers". And the next, and the next and so on. After 10 shots, the range officer came over and suggested I quit wasting ammo since I wasn't even on the target after the first shot. I asked the range officer to ask the guy pulling targets to check the plug. Sure enough there were nine littles holes in plug. The guy pulling targets was so impressed, he called a cease fire so he could run the plug up to the shooting bench!! We all had a good laugh!!

He was very proud of his abilities and challenged me to a lunch hour contest at a local range thinking he was unbeatable. His choice was a smallbore target at 100 yards, one shot. My gun was an iron sighted Ruger SA .44 magnum. I was up first while he was snickering. I stood up and fired an offhand shot using a two hand hold. It hit the 9 ring about 2" from the center (dang lucky shot I admit). After looking at the hole through the spotting scope, he refused to shoot--he suddenly had to attend a very important meeting.
