Take a chance?
I have located this LP08 at auction:
GERMAN DWM LUGER PISTOL WITH LEATHER HOLSTER, model 1914 artillery, 9mm, 8" barrel, blued finish, checkered walnut grips, stock lug, adjustable 8-position rear sight, 1917 chamber date, DWM toggle marking, serial #8938m.

The estimated price is $1000-$1500. Would you gentlemen consider me foolish for purchasing this LP08, 'sight unseen'? Any recommendations?

Wes, if it shoots and is your money, then its a good deal!
From what I've seen, even re-finished artys seem to bring more than a grand. Ed

If you get a 3-day inspection, what do you have to loose?

This auction has an inspection period before the event. I will have to bid by phone or proxy. The pistol is not in an arms auction but in an unrelated area.
The reason that I ask for your opinions is that this pistol is out of my scope of interest.

Wes,
I think you could easily hawk it on Auction Arms or Gunbroker (or maybe even here) and recoup your money if you are not pleased with it... If not immediately, certainly at some time in the future... prices are only going UP.

Is there a way to contact the auction house to see if it is all matching, original finish?
I somehow have a problem with a no return policy especially if the seller really doesn't know guns. I was once really disappointed when I bought a byf 42(advertised as all matching)from an internet site for a good price and when I got the gun it was rebarrelled. Of course I sent the gun back and my money was refunded. Two weeks ago I purchased a cheaply reblued, newly rebarrelled, mismatched, artillery at a gun show for $400.00. At least I knew what it was and bought it as a shooter!! It's a tough choice because the gun might be nice or you could get burned. |

Hello Wes,
I believe 1917 was when the fine tune front and rear sights were being phased out, with most 1918 not having the fine tune feature. You might want to inquire about this. If the LP-08 has the fine tune adjustments, they seem to get a bit more on resale. I have been looking at real ratty shooter LP-08's for awhile in CA-sate. Going prices here for a 50-60% original finish gun seems to be ~ $ 1,200.00 (...which I refuse to pay...). Wes,
I am in agreement with John. If you aren't pleased with it, I am betting you can resell it on GunBroker and make a profit. The escalation in price just in the past few months has been remarkable. Please let us know how it works. Inquiring minds here would all love to know. Regards, Mark

I have delt with them before. Call them and talk to the guy that handels the guns. He will give you a straight answer. No i am not going to bid on it. But if memory serves me right, the last luger they had went for a lot more than it was worth. Good luck Russ

Wes,
The gun looks much better than my $400.00 special and it doesn't look like any pitting on the finish. My Artillery has some pitting under the blue and someone replaced the toggle with a commercial Mauser so it had a rear sight. When they replaced the barrel, they used a cheap aftermarket one, not an artillery Hey, wadda expect for the money?? However, I think some people get caught up in auctions... like gambling.... and don't know when to quit. Figure out your max bid on the gun and don't go any higher. Mark |

The auction was early in the week. The Artillery was a mismatch between frame and cannon (and takedown lever), no markings on holster.

Dwight,
Thanks for taking a look at it for me. Saved me a lot of grief.

Gosh, $2000 for a mismatched artillery!!! I hope that there wasn't a buyer premium and state sales tax added. The holster threw me off a bit on my unofficial guess. But $2000...(gag!) There's someone out there who deserately needs to get on the forum. I was thinking about selling some of my spare artilleries but now I think that I will hold onto them.

Big Norm,
There's no sales tax in the Great State of Oregon, but the auction's buyer premium is 12%. --Dwight |

Big Norm,
I am having trouble with the concept of "spare" artilleries. Do you keep them stashed in your "spare" Mercedes? I tell my wife that each and every Luger that I own is "necessary". Please do not destroy an idea that I have spent years instilling in her.

Wes,
I understand that Big Norm has his "spare" Navies stashed in his spare Rolls.

Wes and Hugh,
what I have is a primary collection of Lugers that contains the best of what I have. But everyso often something comes up that is better than the one that I have and at a very good price. A good example is a 1915 artillery that I bought once when I was first starting. Nice gun but no matching mag. Somewhere along the way I found another 1915 that had a matching mag AND stock at what I considered a great price. Well, the first artillery now is my spare. Then there is the 1900 AE that I bought at one time. But an estate auction came up. Some old farmer died and he had a mint 1900 AE with Ideal stock. I suspect that he was the original owner. I got the set for only $1600. Well, the first 1900 now is my spare. These events just sort of happen. As for my car, I found that my gun safe would not fit in a Mercedes or a Rolls unless I customized them and that would destroy their retail sales value so I thought that a Humvee and my gun safe would fit much better. But the gas milage is terrible. So I thought about buying the house next door and using it as a warehouse (the extra garage space could come in handy) but what would I do with two swimming pools? The other houses swimming pool isn't even a 50 meter pool and it only has one diving board. I can't get my lazy girlfriends to cut my lawn now. They are always complaining about using a push lawnmower. Gripe! Gripe! Can you imagine how hard it would be to get them to cut two lawns? I would have to get two more girlfriends and that would be time and cost prohibitive and I would have to reduce the rent that they pay. Ah, life can be so difficult at times. Sometimes it just does not pay to be a brilliant, handsome, modest guy with a great personality. Take my advise and don't try it. Big Norm |
