Hello, I am in awe at the amount of knowledge that some of you guys have on lugers. I am a college student with a love for WW2 memorobilia. I just purchased my first luger as a gift for my father. It is a 1936 Mauser. It is numbers matching including magazine. It has the original holster (as far as I know) and tool. I think it is a fine piece of history. But again, this is my first time. I am looking forward to giving it to my dad. I have one problem. I read that on 1936 lugers the stamp on the right side of the barrel should be 90 degrees clockwise from vertical. This doesn't seem to be so on mine. Is this normal or is it probably a replaced piece?

I don't think that I have read this anywhere, but I haven't thought or cared either. Meaning that it hadn't occured to me [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

So, take all factors into consideration first.

1. Markings were stamped by hand, so I would expect some flucuation of how it is stamped.
2. How is yours marked?
3. What is the bluing in comparison to the entire gun? Matching, a bit off, or what?
4. Check for other indications, does it have the serial number on the barrel? Correct proofs and acceptance for the time period?

5. Can you post pictures of this marking?

To be honest with you, I can't remember where I saw that info. I will keep looking for it and post it if I find it. I will get some pictures up sometime next week. The more info I get on the weapon, the happier my dad will be to own it.

bravo, for what it's worth, sample of 1, my 1936 right side proof mark and upper left side acceptance mark are both rotated 90 degrees clockwise from "up". Hope this helps! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Thanks for the info. I'll tell my dad that his gift was stamped by a sober employee. I have been on here for a day and I enjoy the atmosphere and expertise on this forum. It really helps new guys like me.

Tom, mine was completed in about July of 1936. Maybe the inspector had a bad head from a 4th of July Celebration!!

Tom, maybe the inspector was new and the instructions said "line it up with the top of the barrel" and he thought the top was the muzzle!! [img]confused.gif[/img]

Bravo:

Looked at six 1936's...5 in blocks k-l-m have rotated mark.......1 in "n" block is not rotated.
The block number is the little alpha character
below your frame serial #. Hope this helps!!

Maybe they fired the guy who was stamping them wrong. Thanks for the help. If anyone has more info on this subject please shed some light on it.
