Default "G" Date shows up for sale at LGS

Hi,

This pistol isn't mine, and I have no personal interest in it, but thought other board members might be interested. Don't contact me about it...

An early B90 S91 proofed Collector Variation 1 "G" date S/42 Luger s/n 4348a showed up this weekend at our LGS (Local Gun Store) Carolina GunRunners in Raleigh, NC.

According to Hallock and Van De Kant there were 3,556 in this variation out of 55,838 "G" dates.

I stopped by and got a close look at it. CellPhone pictures are attached. I passed on it because of condition, but also realize that it's one of the rare variations of "G" date Lugers with B90 and S91 proofs. A forum member interested in collecting "G" data variations may need this one...

S/N 4348a appears to be all matching. It's at about 80-85% finish with some minor pitting. Good bore. The barrel appears better than the frame and receiver, and doesn't show halos around the serial number (I believe that it should on rust blued "G" dates...). The barrel witness mark is slightly misaligned which may indicate a barrel refinish.

I did not pull the grips to check them, but they are age appropriate to the pistol. All the parts I looked at have matching serial numbers.

There is a crack in the left grip near the safety, but the piece is still there. It has a commercial wood bottom magazine.

Contact at the shop is manager Casey Grant. Link is above.

If you need a G-S/42-CV1 variation, hope that this helps you!

Pictures follow...

Marc

Mrerick

Interesting information concerning this G-Date. I also have a G-Date, serial 4229a with the B-90 and S-91 proofs. Didn't know it was a rare variation.
