The bluing was applied by hand; i.e., the whole part was not dipped in a solution. The rust bluing solution was wiped on and you may encounter a frame or part where a bit of the solution got on the area not intended to be blued. I've seen that on a Luger or two. Then the part is hung in a room to actually rust. The part was carded (wire brushed) to reveal the bluing underneath. The process was repeated until the depth of bluing desired was achieved.

Rust bluing is a beautiful finish but time and labor intensive.
