Hey Dan !!!

Go to the new section labeled "Site Help and Feedback' and then look into the folder called "FAQ's".

You upload to the same upload site as the old Luger Forum. Same 180KB jpeg file limit, as well...

Then when you type your new posting, look for the "image" icon at the bottom of your text page. This let's you link a photo to your new posting...

I was a bit slow on the uptake, so it took me 4-5 tries until I got it right...

Can you explain to me how to tell the diference between 1920, 1923, and 1926 ?

I keep reading about 1920 and 1923 lugers, but how do you tell when you have a 1926 ? Don't most of these have blank date chambers ? Did you use serial numbers from DWM to figure out your Artillery was made in 1926 ?

Pete, first of all, do not trust your memory - it's a '23 not '26 (There may not even be a '26). Secondly, I am far from being the guy to ask, as I've only been into Lugers for about six months. Having said that, I realize that "Ralph told me it was a '23" may not be the best answer, so I did some quick research. It's S# is 77168, proofed with Nitro and "Germany". Most of the 1923 Lugers are identical to the 1920's. Some '23's have "safe" and "loaded" safety and extractor markings (more valuable). 1923 was the year that DWM reverted to 5 digit serial number. Resumed at approx 73,500 and went to approx 96,000. Pistols in this range are commonly referred to as the Model 1923.

If you have any interest in the pistols manufactured immediately after WWI I would suggest Jan Still's "Weimar Lugers". It gives new insight into the commercial models, and is probably the most up to date information from some of the most knowledgeable Luger collectors around.
There has been discussion for years about the term 1920 and 1923 Commercial. It is know at about what serial number the commercial Lugers ceased production in WWI, and it is also know about where they started again. DWM simply started production where they left off in WWI at approximately serial number 75,000. After WWI production started at approximately this serial number. Upon approching serial number 100,000 DWM apparently decided to go to the letter suffix rather than use a six digit serial number. The 1920 and 1921 chamber dated DWM's were probably made at the same time the five digit DWM's were made, as they are found only in the ns, a, and b letter suffix ranges. When DWM went to the letter suffix serial number, they started at letter suffix i. By starting at i, the serial numbers picked up right where the normal sequence of serial numbers would have been had the letter suffix been used all along. The letter i is the 9th letter of the alphabet, and DWM would have been in the 9th letter suffix had they been using the letter suffix all along. Except for the 1920 and 1921 chamber dated commercials, there are no DWM commercials in the ns, a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and h letter suffix range.
I have never seen a valid explaination of where the early authors arrived at the 1920 or 1923 Commercial, but it is in Fred Datig's book of 1955 and continues to this day. In discussions with dealers they indicate they continue to use it for the sake of simplicity. Everyone is use to accepting a 1920 Commercial as a letter suffix pistol, and a 1923 as a five digit commercial.

Your typo got me thinking/confused about 1926 arty's...

p.s. I, too, was tempted by this 1923 Artillery, as well. I decided on another arty from 1918 (also from the WOL's) because it had moderate wear & tear and possibly saw some WWI use (assumption only on my part). I went after this other arty when I realized mints are great, but guns with wear & tear and history are equally as exciting in my collection ! After seeing your photo posting, I am beginning to wonder if I chose the right arty...

As others on the old Forum told me, do not igonore the ones you love and love you...
