WTK: 1936 Mauser Luger

Hi,

I am new to the forum here. Would like your feedback my 1936 Mauser Luger rig, and its approximate value. It is all matching, and has holster wear in expected places. Bought it some 20 years ago, and sold to me as a WW2 bring back.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Looks like 1936 S/42 Mauser luger sn 3368g with two matching magazines, original 1936 GeCo holster and the tool in 95% or better original finish. Assuming it's all matching and in good mechanical condition, it's a particularly nice Luger rig.

I'm not sure what a complete high condition rig with two matching magazines is going for, but I'd bet it's $3,000 or better these days.

One caution, after Bill pointed it out below, I took a closer look at the magazine bases. They don't have the typical factory grind pattern. They may have been renumbered to match at some point. These things are very hard to verify...

Thanks all for your feedback. Bill, fair point about the mag with the sharper fonts. It is a spare, and the mag's alum. body has patina to show where it made contact with the holster's leather. None on the one that is inserted in the pistol. It is also subject to less metal wear on the soft aluminum bottom plug, being a spare. That is what I can surmise.

I was referring to the different type 3 . They are different fonts. I am sure both are original mags just feel maybe the 2nd one was boosted. Also from the photo looks like an other number was removed (flat appearance). Whatever it's a nice luger. Bill

I agree. he second magazine has been altered to match.

OK, just for the sake of conversation, shouldn't the entire gun be view with greater suspicion if one of the magazines has been boosted?

Grinding/sanding/filing an aluminum magazine base and re-stamping numbers isn't too technical a job. It can be done in your basement with cheap Harbor Freight tools, with no 'finishing' required. The steel pistol itself is a bigger undertaking, and the surface finishing would likely be beyond most amateur mechanics (it's beyond my skillset).

Years ago, I replaced two Luger barrels and stamped the receiving pistol's number and land measurement in them. Not to raise perceived value, but because if the originals had them, it seemed to me the Numrich replacements should too. I imagine many enthusiasts feel the same way about magazines.

Mag may have been added in service, so not necessarily "boosted"; but I see a $2k rig not a $3k rig.
Unless you are talking about big dealer or "fishing" prices; it does have noticable wear. JMHO.

The locking bolt spring appears to be broken, and part of it missing......

I agree with your value. I still ,say the second mag was boosted. Field replacements were normally S42 marked. In war no reason to file and renumber a mag. Whatever it will always be wrong. Bill

It's not missing the spring, it's simply broken. But, the tip of the spring on my BYF 41 has been broken off for ages. But the remaining spring still locks the locking bolt.

And I just leave it be.
