Post Swiss 1882 - 82/29 revolvers

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know the manufacturing dates of the different 1882 & 82/29 swiss army and civil revolvers?
Thanks.

This is a Swiss army 1882 revolver 3rd version.

Here's another 1882 3rd. version but civil.
It's virtually the same except that the s/n starts with a "P".

There is an excellent German language book by Eugen Heer that goes into all of the Swiss Revolvers in detail, "Geshichte und Etwicklung der Militarhandfeuerwaffen in der Schweiz". Perhaps one of our European members can translate the required info. I believe that the "P" prefix noted on one shown, indicates that it was officially released by the Swiss military for "Private" sale. Tom

Hello Panda,

I have some Swiss revolver books that I will be getting in the next few months from Europe; but now cannot help with the dates.

LF members "Swissdaggers" and "Guisan" visit the LF from time to time; but they do hang out a lot more at the following great Swiss weapons site :

http://pub18.ezboard.com/btheswissri...ommessageboard

You might try posting your question there in the pistol section.

p.s. Regarding your P-s/n M1882; I think it might be a commercial sale revolver...

Regards,

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

I have not been able to find a reference for exact dates of manufacture by serial number, but according to Christian Reinhart (â??Pistolen und Revolver der Schweizâ?, 1988) there were 37254 of the Revolver, Ordonnanz, Modell 1882 produced between September 1883 and the last issue and close of production on 21 November 1932. The serial number started with 1 through 37254. There was a special serialization for pistols made for civilian or commercial sales. This special series had a â??Pâ? prefix. The civilian model was exactly like the military issue. The serial range of the civilian model is not indicated but presumed to have started with P1. There were modifications to this model in 1886 (about serial number 1501), 1888 (about serial number 540 of the â??P-waffenâ? [Privat or Private/Civilan]) and 1893. The 1886 and 1888 modification consisted primarily of an improvement to the loading gate that incorporated a hammer block. The 1893 variation was issued to the â??Bicycle Corpsâ? (Radfahrerkorps) and was produced in three lots totaling 337 pieces. It had an unusual large fixed lanyard loop attached to the base of the grip.

Reinhart lists the serial numbers of the 82/29 (Revolver, Ordonnanz, Modell 1929) as 50020-68229, with the first issue occurring in February 1933, and the last issue in June of 1946. Fritz H?¤usler ("Sweizer Faustfeuerwaffen â?? Armes de poing suisses", 1975) lists the range as being from 50001-68229 and indicates that the 82/29 was â??an improvement over the Model 82â? and the â??new design featured a simplified mechanism and strengthened frameâ?. H?¤usler also states that the 82/29 was produced in a civilian sale series having a â??Pâ? prefix serial number in the range P25001 to P27000. No specific dates of production were listed for either the military or civilian models. He goes on to indicate that â??a number of the P-series revolvers were used by the Border Police [Customs Service]â?.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Ron

Thanks everybody for the input.
This ties in with the info I have.

Pete, I'm looking forward to hearing from your new books.

There's an interesting thing with the 1882 of the top picture: all parts (including trigger, gate and hammer) are blued like the 82/29 but unlike most other 1882s. The Rutsch book mentions some fully blued M1882 4th version but no 3rd. According to the former owner who inherited it from his father (the first owner), the gun has never been reworked. Has anybody got an explanation for this mistery?

Panda,

I am just curious, because your user profile does not indicate the country in which you reside...

Are you finding these great Swiss revolvers in the USA...or elsewhere...? I have only seen 3 come up for sale here in the USA in the past year and not nearly as in the nice condition as your M1882's...

As you know, I brought my M1882 in from CH (via Swissdaggers...). I think I am ready for my 2nd. one...

Regards,

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

Come on Pete,

there may be no specific line for my location but it's written right across my face in my user profile. <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

I guess it's easier to find Swiss items in Switzerland. However, don't think all items here are museum-grade like this M1882. I believe I was quite lucky to get this one. Even if it was a little pricey (for local standards) it was worth it.
