Winters long project
It now can be told what I have been up to in place of working on my carbine project. Thanks to Hugh for the grips and GT taking time from his new venture to get me a couple of bottoms and my friend John Martz who is my inspiration. All of these gentlemen knew what I was up to and I thank them for keeping it quite until it was done. Boy do I ever appreciate the old craftsmen that built the Lugers back in the early century. Knowing with what I have to work with and what they had back then they were truley craftsmen.
Well here it is as I want to share it with the forum before I dfisplay it at the shot show. The picture tells it all. |

YEAH!!! What a wonderful piece of craftsmanship. It would be a pure joy to have that baby cannon erupting at the end of your arm! There isn't enough drool available in the free world to adequately express my envy. Outstanding job.

Hi Neil,
What a great way to spend a winter !!! Is the gun made of stainless or steel left "in the white" ? Also, did you make this one from scratch or did you start with two donor guns and weld them together...as master Martz does...? Regards, Pete... |

A little bit about the gun. 1st the 45 GAP round was developed by Glock and is a 45 with the same length as the 9mm there fore it only takes one gun. The barrel was machined from a Dougles blank and was made in two pieces as the sight base is tig welded on made from the same stock as the barrel (don't have a dividing head to make it in one piece and after doing it probably would do another one the same way.
Tha lower was shortened 1/2 inch as are the babies I make in 9mm. All the internals are done the same as well, except the main spring and it is special. There are quite a few changes that havew to be made and I did keep notes on all of them. There were a lot of go back and change it a little more(s) to get the bugs out of it and there are a couple more before I will be 100% satisfied. The mag was made by splitting a 10 round 1911 45 magazine length wise and welding back together. A form die was made simular to GT's magazine repair form and after the top shape was cut and the steel annealed the mag was shaped over the form for the fed lips. A special follower hade to be made as well as the GT bottoms. The mag has a FXO sprial full length spring. If I do nay more I will figure the developed length and form them from scratch as Martz does as I feel it will be easier, but of course I have been wroong before. The gun is finished for now in the white with strawing od the normally done parts and the front fight is heat blued. To do the ist one it has been a labor of love but very rewarding. The GAP round has the same ballistics as the 45 we all know of but the felt recoil is not that bad especially when compared to a small officers style 1911. The toggle really absorbes the recoil, of course I have not fired it that many time (approximately 30) but then its cold and snow covered here in Indiana. Will be happy to answer any questions. If any of the forum members are at the Shot Show next weekend stop by as the Raffle gun and the 45 GAP will both be there. Look in the directory for Cylinder & Slide booth number as we got in too late this year and are with them. Would enjoy putting some faces to the names. I will be there off and on as I will be strolling the show as well.
Off the beat a little, I built a 204 Ruger varmit rifle for my grandson and will be looking for components for another. Anybody got a remingtom small short action for sale resonable? Thanks for all the comments it makes me feel as it was a worth while project. |

Somehow I missed this thread when it appeared... WOW is all I can say...
I would love to know what mods you had to do to the frame other than shortening...

I can visualize that Baby in a Jerry Burney shoulder holster with pocket for the extra magazine. I think Ron Wood in the above post described my feelings about this jewel very accurately!

I represent Glock Inc, creators of the .45 GAP. It appears that you willingly embarked on manufacturing a firearm chambered in .45 GAP WITHOUT a license from the company.
We can approach this two ways. First, you can pay the normal and reasonable licensing fee or second, you can send the firearm you have created to the address below. I look forward to receiving the gun. Jack Hiles Mesa AZ
