Any Skype users on the forum?
I have had skype on my laptop for some time, and have successfully used it to call the USA from Europe on more than one occasion. I am just curious if any of the membership also use this Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) program to stay in touch with distant friends?

I recently have been messing with Skype to do video calls to the grandchildren. At 2 1/2 years old their development is skyrocketing, so it is a treat to be able to "see" them on a regular basis. I haven't tried communicating with anyone else.

I have tried it from here, the audio portion works well from here, but the video was very poor.

John,
I use it on regular basis. Because I am travelling a lot for my job, I have a Skype account on my laptop and one at home, in this way I can contact my family when abroad using the internet connection of the hotels. It works quite well. Also my parents have at home and then they can have long chat with the children. Cheers, Mauro Cheers, Mauro

I also use Skype regularly. It's performance has been very good here.
They have an interesting design model. All of the connections are managed from servers in England. I believe the connections themselves take as direct a path as possible. Ed, I expect that you're encountering propagation delays due to the techniques the government there uses to monitor communications. Clint, it could be internet service provider problems (they may filter or prioritize certain types of traffic) or (if you're using dialup) the speed of the last leg of the connection. Marc |
