Ok, here's how it goes down!
As usual, I'm just skimming thru the for sale adds, and I realize that I'm absolutely broke. All incoming monies are already earmarked for living expenses, and debt reduction. But right exactly at the moment I think of that, there it is, bigger than life it's self! The Luger you tell yourself you've been looking for for years! ... ... Well, you don't even hesitate, bang! You make arrangements to acquire this life long quest finally fulfilled and done with. At least you have that happy inside glow for about sixty seconds until you realize the wife is still unaware of what just transpired? ... again, ... Now my lovely bride has been at my side for 43 years, and has never ever denied me anything i wanted, but we kind of have a loose knit agreement that big purchases will be discussed?
So, while I'm pondering what my "excuse, purchase, exit story" will be. My wife looks me in the eye, and says, "you bought another gun didn't you?" So now the chain of events are reaching the cascade level and you blurt out, "yes, but it's the last one!" And even my German Sheppard Rocky looks at me like, "we know your lying now!" and "baby Jesus is crying!" I counter with the only thing i can think of and that is, "you know how these German Sheppard's lie!" Now, both the wife and dog are having nothing to do with me and as i sit at the computer licking my wounds and hurt ego, an email from a friend comes across, "hey I found you a screaming M1 carbine...!!!! ... After a short pause & reflection, you write back, "how much?".......... Best to all, til....lat'r....GT... |

The way to handle these situations is to have the gun delivered to a friend. Later, when you are away from the house, have your friend bring it to the house and give it to your wife while telling her that he's returning your gun. Thus she actually brings it across the threshold and puts it away for you.

Hiding gun purchases from the wife never worked for me as well as devious ways to get the gun. I found that open honesty always worked for me. If my future purchase (of anything) was high priced I was always honest about and presented my argument why I wanted it. Sometimes this actually worked! Of course, always being conciderate of her and doing a lot of the honey do;s helps too!

no known cure
I think it is just our destiny, I think that people that are addicted to hard drugs and alcohol look as us and go, "I hear he's a gun collector, poor bastard!".... And so it goes.... ....GT

G.T. has given me my laugh for the day. Great story and I'm sure the waters will calm in time.
My wife and I have been married over 53 years and we have an unspoken agreement; I say nothing about her shoes, purses, dresses, jackets etc and she says nothing about my guns. Still, for my own protection, I'm careful when I bring a new gun home. Last week I took several handguns to the range and returned with one more than I took. She didn't count how many I took so one extra wasn't noticed. |

As the late great Tom Armstrong once said, "they can count your drinks but not your guns".

Ah... subterfuge... It's almost like the the intelligence games during a war.
I took the opportunity in June last year to clear out a number of things that I loved "less" in the collection. That included a couple of Lugers that friends very much wanted. I sold things for fair prices, and also acquired a few new utility guns. The net effect has been fewer firearms in the safes, and some extra money in the pocket. The new firearms were all significant improvements in my accumulation. One of the best "exchanges" has been the sale of an AK-47 that had accumulated considerable value because of it's collector status, with a new Les Baer M1911a1 - a custom ,45ACP that I never thought I could afford.

I am very fortunate in that my wife of nearly 40 years says this, "I don't care, seen one, seen them all".

Hi Lyn
Glad you enjoyed it Lyn, I sometimes post with the thought, "what's the cost for a little smile!" Well, the cost is nothing, and the reward is just for a moment, we feel a little better than we did a few minutes ago... Besides, nothing is as fun as real life experiences! Can't make that stuff up... only embellish a little as we go along! best, til...lat'r...GT...

My wife likes very expensive embroidery machines AND guns. She recently bought a machine worth a bundle. So I'll have an easy time for guns for a while more yet.

I don't try to hide it from my wife .. BUT I don't advertise it before or after. She knows and she expects it but she also knows an incurable addiction when she sees it.

Reminds me when I was a kid and my dad came home with a gun that he just bought. Always in hushed tones “hey Jimmy look what I got, just don’t tell your mother “ always followed by my reply “oh cool, yeah mom doesn’t need to know” thing was mom couldn’t have cared less.
