East German Lugers
I have a 1937 Mauser luger that has the Russian capture mark of a x on the left side. Also it has the East German Vopo grips on it I assume it was captured by the Russians in WW2 the given to East Germany for aid. Anybody know any other history of thes eLugers

Re: East German Lugers
SM, Nothing much has been published yet on these post WW2 reworked PO8s, but Warren Buxton in his "The P38 Pistol" Volume 3, does discuss these briefly, along with a lenthy discuss of the markings, as they are observed on the reworked P38s. Tomh

Re: East German Lugers
Tom,
You are correct that Warren Buxton has done the best so far on the East German reworks. I can't wait to get back home to pull mine out and read what Warren has to say concerning the P.38s as I feel the information will be relative to the Luger also. Marvin |

Re: East German Lugers
Marvin,
When you do, why don't you scan the info and post here for all of us to read that don't have the book? |

Re scanning Buxton's info.
I agree that the info would be interesting, but I don't think Mr. Buxton's copyright has expired. However, he might be amenable to having some info posted if someone asked him. Does anyone have an e-mail address or phone number?

Re: Re scanning Buxton's info.
Copywrite laws went an overhaul in the late '70's. An individual author's copyright is good for 75 years after his death. Be sure to get the the author's or his estate's permission before posting any work publicly.

Hi Ad! Welcome back from your vacation
As the resident attorney of record for the forum I have a question:
Isn't there a provision in the copyright laws that allows for "minor" extracts or quotes from a copyrighted work as long as credit is given to the copyright owner and the publication source? If so, wouldn't that allow for extracting and quoting a paragraph or two for posting here without violation of a copyright? Sort of an advertisement for his book... -John |

Mr. Buxton's copyright
Hi, John. Thanks for the welcome home. 'preciate it. Concerning Mr. Buxton's copyright, I still think the most prudent and courteous course is to simply e-mail a request to Mr. Buxton to include some of his data here on the forum. I agree; he might appreciate a little publicity. On the other hand if he refuses permission, it defers any trouble for the forum and its webmaster.
Now, for my masterful legal analysis of this weighty matter: (1) I'll defer to Roger's comment that a copyright continues for 75 years after the holder's death. (2) In Buxton, volume three, there appears "copyright 1990...No portion of this book may be reproduced, copied or duplicated by any means, or by any system including data storage...without prior consent of the author. Reviewers are exempted...for the purpose of quoting brief passages...OR INCLUSION IN ARMS OR HISTORICAL TYPE PERIODICALS". (My emphasis). (3) The issue, therefore, is whether this forum could reasonably be deemed an "arms or historical type periodical? I reiterate, however: Why create a problem; which we can obviate by simply asking Mr. Buxton for his permission? Quod erat demonstratum, res ipsa loquitor and other phrases to drive up my fees. |

Ad, you may charge twice as much as the fo
for performing the hazardous duties of being the webmaster.
Now for those math whizzes out there: How much is two times zero? thanks for the analysis Ad... I guess someone ought to get in touch with Mr. Buxton and invite him to the forum... and then try to schmooze his blessing on posting some data from his books. BTW, my invoices for my appraisals of your new Luger and P-38 are almost ready and I'll try to have them with me at lunch on Friday... -John |
