Arty purchase

Just signed up a few days ago. A lot of interesting topics. Any how, A luger is one firearm I dont own and a family member has owned an arty for 40-45 years. Have allways wanted one but am completely ignorant where to start looking. I live in the cleveland area so I hve my choice of two gun shows to go to. I would like to occasionly shoot it , but mostly just to enjoy the way it looks and the mechanisof it. I just think lugers are one of the most interesting handguns ever made. As far as price I informed my wife what i was looking for , gave her an idea, and she just rolled her eyes. She muttered under her breath about one more of my toys to sell when I kick the bucket Thanks,bob

Welcome to the forum bob!

Artillery's are fairly expensive, a shooter is $800-$1200 and then for a nicer one, $1700-$2500.

Gun shows will probably show you 1 or 2 a year, so it is better to look on-line and put in a wanted ad here on the forum.

Thanks for the info,good advice.When I finally get one ,I will put it with my 40 yr old Colt Python and my almost new in box S&W model 1955 .45 target revolver.Still shoot those also,bob

If I was you, I would watch the internet and get familar with prices. Here is one that I was thinking about

The stock looks phoney though and the side plate needs to be looked at. So don't get hung up on the stock. The bluing on the side plate looks a bit off but that could just be the photography. If I wasn't doing my taxes right now, I would run out to this guys place and take a look at it. My taxes have their priorities so I am going to pass on it.

I agree with Big Norm, the side plate looks out of place with almost no blueing left. The extractor also looks out of character too with little blueing and no evident serial number.

The rear sight does not have the fine adjust - not necessarily a problem. But curious, when was the fine adjust removed from the rear sight?

The pistol Norm posted appears to be totally legitimate except for the stock which is a repro. Sights are fine, 1917 saw the beginning of the phase out of the fine tune sights.

you might be right about the extractor in picture #17. I looked at about 10 of my artilleries and I only found one that didn't have a serial number on the extractor and it was also a 1917. I know my gun is legit. Even two other 1917's of mine, a 1918, a Thai artillery and a bunch of others had serial numbers. Maybe a person on the German assembly line was doing some singing

and missed it.

well, when this event is over and the gun is sold, let us know what your concerns are. The forums supposed to be a learning experience for people like Fishman. I don't think that I know the seller, but I may. I meet a lot of guys at local gun shows. There's a lot of silent Luger owners around here and I am sometimes surprised at what some guys have. Little hidden treasures.
