Default Gunshop luger

This post has nothing to do with the subject but I haven't figured out how to start a new one so I will just hook onto this one.
I was in a gun shop today and saw a nice Luger for sale. It was the shop owners gun and he rated it at 95%. I didn't have the heart to tell him it had been reblued. It was stamped 1940 on the receiver and 42 on the toggle. The grip panels were dark brown plastic with a bulls eye on them. He said it had NAZI proof marks but in the dim light they did not appear that way to me. They looked like winged eagles but no swastica. He knows nothing about Lugers but he was busy as a one armed paper hanger so I left with the comment, it is a nice Luger. With my limited description, can some one tell me more about it. He is asking $5000 for it.

Default Gunshop luger

Moved from other thread.

Grips described are post war East German VoPo.
If it is a former DDR luger, 5000 is a ridiculous price.

Any 'average' WW2 era luger (not counting Krieghoffs), anything around $1500-$2000 is a normal 'high' in very good condition (nicer it is, or matched mags could drive price up)

The "winged eagles" over a circle with swastika would have had the offensive swastika "peened" by the Russians when rebuilt after capture. Most were re-blued when rebuilt with a dark black finish.

It is a post WWII rebuild , from Russia or one of the associated republics, or East Germany.
The bullseye grips are EG, but could have been put on at any time or be original.

$5000 is someone's mis-informed dream; this variety luger is in the $800 to $1100 range.

Please don't just "hook on" to an unrelated post, starting your own post is easy.

Neither the Russians nor the East Germans bothered to deface German 'nazi' markings.

Only in some cases East German district markings were peened out after import in the US in the late 1970s. Later imports usually have the East German markings intact.

The gun shop owner may have been referencing the normal Nazi era stick eagle with a number such as 63 under it as "Nazi proofs". He's correct if that's the case. Nazi proof marks don't have to include the swastika.

The $5,000 price tag is completely wishful thinking.

Sad to hear of a gunshop owner being so un informed about such an important pistol type.

That is curious Vilm,
as nearly all of the thousands of K98 rifles imported to the US from the "East" had their swastika peened.
Maybe it was the Ukraine or other former USSR republic?

Correct,
only the "firing" proof has the swastika.

Even Israel didn't bother to remove them from their K98s.

So whoever 'sanitized' the K98s, I doubt it was any old world country. Perhaps some overambitious importer.

The gun shop owner that I spoke of knows nothing about Luger pistols. He even thought there was a Luger factory.
While on the subject I would like to ask two questions. What does vopos stand for? Since I cannot figure out how to post a message, would some one please tell me what I click on to enter a post?

VoPo + Volks Polizie (my spelling may be off) The Volks Polizie were the East German Sate Police after Eastern Germany formed a government under the CCCP.

Literally translated, "Volks Polizei" would be "People's Police" but Heinz is correct that they were a State organization.

The English word "folks" came from the German word "volks" and is pronounced the same.

It won't be at the top of the individual thread, such as you are reading now. But will be at the top left of the forum, as when you choose a subject, like "all post WWII lugers". Blue tab.
