Looks more like the sights came off a Mauser type .22 rifle.

Hi Doug,

The rear sight is off of a Mauser rifle, probably a Kar98k

C96 rear sights are graduated from 50 - 500 or from 50 - 1000 meters, Mauser .22 rifle rear sights run from 25 - 200 meters, and there is a (very rare) Artillery Luger rear sight that has graduations out to 1000 meters. Kar98k rifle sights go to 2000 meters.

As indicated by Kyrie, the 25 to 200 meter settings were typical for the Mauser type .22 rifle. The sights pictured are identical to the ones on my Mauser "Sportsmodell" .22.

You may want to take a closer look at the rear sight on your Sport Model - if it has a rear sight graduated to 2000 meters someone had been having fun with it

You might want to borrow a K98k to see what it's sight actually looks like. The sight shown is approximately half as long as a K98k sight, and the graduations on a K98k sight start with a 1 on the left side, 2 on the right side, 3 on the left side and so on without skipping any numbers right up to the 20. The two zeroes are left off the K98k sight but represent from 100 to 2000 meters. The sight pictured on ebay starts with a 2 on the left side and a 5 immediately opposite it, for 25 meters. The next mark is a 5 on the left side and a 0 on the right side for 50 meters, and so on with graduations for 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 meters. Next, the K98k sight will raise straight up so the graduations on the backside of the sight can be seen. The sight pictured will only raise to the 200 meter mark as the pivot pin is in the wrong position to allow the sight to be raised straight up. The K98k sight base has a screw hole which can be seen with the sight laying flat, which the rear sight shown lacks. Also the dimensions given will not fit a K98k barrel.

As a collector of Mauser rifles, and a retired manufacturer of custom rifles based on Mauser actions, I have seen a large number of Mauser rifles and sights and can say from experience the rear sight pictured appears to be from a Kar98k rifle. The Kar98k rear sight you describe is a late war sight, the sight pictured looks to be from a mid to late 1930Ã¢??s production rifle. And the sight dimensions will indeed fit a Kar98K barrel.

If you will trace the lineage of the K98k from the G98, to the Kar98b, to the Kar98a, to the K98k you will find that none have the sight as pictured on the ebay ad. Beginning with the Kar98b the sights have not changed to any degree. They all hinge at the front to allow them to be raised past verticle. The sight pictured on ebay will not do this.

You can't get much earlier than the Reichpost K98k, and it has the rear sight of the same configuration as used on the last of the adjustable sights used in 1945.

The sight pictured on ebay is found only on the .22 Mauser type rifles, and if you can find a picture of a K98k with that sight I will have no trouble publicly admitting that I was wrong. I will refer you to page 12 of Law's book which has a reprint of a training chart dated 1934, and the rifle has the standard K98k sight as used throughout production. Can you refer me to a reference book that has a K98k with the sight as pictured on ebay?
