Mauser P08 150mm barell.. opinions!

Hi fellas, Just wanted some opinions on a Mauser P08 that i'm looking at. all comments welcome.

Apologies on advance these are the only pictures I could get so far.

Is this a gun that you are planning to acquire? If it is, only two questions need to ask the seller: (1) Does it work reliably, and (2) How much is it. If seller tells you that he has not fired it in the past 20 years and he does not know it works or not, something is very wrong. But if it works, and the cost is OK, buy it.

It would likely have no interest to a collector, but I like long barrels. My only concern would be that from the shine it appears to be refinished...Not a detraction (IMHO) unless it is excessively buffed...Which destroys edges, stampings, and tool marks...

Looks like about a ~$750 shooter...But definitely an attention getter...A fun first Luger...

Mauser toggle train...Police sear safety...Definitely buffed hard...Frame has Mauser hump...Grips look new...

Good learning experience. If it was 7.65 it would be even better...

Seller says new barrel so it has been barreled. No 9mm I'm afraid and the guy is looking in the just shy of 2k range for it...

Might leave this one.

At just shy of $2K, you should run, not walk, away.
But admittedly it would be a great shooter (at less than half that price...).

I saw collector listing nice 1920 DWM at $800-$900 in trader column of gunboards.com. No pictures, assume it's a nice one. If that one only goes $800-$900, why should this one go $750, simply because it carries a Mauser banner? Is that banner a big deal on this instance? If I link two guns together, this banner probably goes $400. Luger vs Luger.

I think the Mauser banner is what makes this 'shooter' more desirable...rarer than commoner DWM = Command more money than DWM...

Aftermarket barrel is questionmark...Is this a Numrich cheapie, maybe slamfire or not fire at all (excessive chamber length)??? Remember AMT Hardballer I mentioned some time ago; had oversize chamber and all ejects were bulged??? Hard to figure that reamer would be so oversize unless ground by other than reputable reamer makers...

OTOH, location is everything...Maybe in Oz, $2K is reasonable...

Australia is a bit more expensive but not that much more. If it was a collector I would pay that sort of dough but for this one judging by your estimate I would not pay more than half of his asking price.

This would be considered a shooter because of the rebarrel and refinish. These max out at about USD $1000 in value, with something modified and heavily buffed worth considerably less.

Luger collectors value a pistol highly when it is as close as possible to the original factory state. In the USA $2K could get you an un-messed with military Luger in very high condition.

Right now a USD $ buys AU$1.10. So, this Luger is way overpriced for a shooter in any market I know of. Your results may vary...

If you're after a nice shooter, you could assemble one with some sweat equity. I have an '06 American Eagle in the usual 7.65mm. I got it cheap because of its issues--broken grip safety spring, refinished (although gently; it was blasted, not buffed), and a mis-matched barrel. I bought a 6" standard configuration barrel, had it turned to capture the "pencil taper" within--part of the elegance of the early Lugers. G.T is installing it on the upper, and when this is complete, I'll be able to try my hand at a little refinishing prep, and then some rust bluing. $750 for gun, $50 for machining, $75 pus old bbl. for install. My work, of course, is free to myself. I think doing this is a way to get really close and personal with the pistol and learn/know it inside and out. If one were to pay the cost of expert professional refinishing, that would probably blow the budget entirely, but I guess what I'm saying is that if you're at all handy, there's all manner of little successes that await you if you're trying to spiff up a not-so-minty Luger.

To be honest, my opinions are not worth a bucket of warm spit...You would be better served with the estimates of the knowledgeable members of the Forum...

the seller for the long barrel ended up sending me a mitchel's Mauser link for reference when I asked for more details about it. Tat was enough to scare me off. Apparently he got it and another long barrel mauser from Serbia in 2011 had them redone and rebarreled from blanks buffed and blued at zastava arms. Not really what I was looking for and definitely not at that price.
