Post First luger

I'm thinking about getting my first Luger again (It's been floating around in the back of my mind for more than 3 years). I have a basic understanding of the different eras/varients. What I'm primarily looking for right now is a shooter- I think I'd like to collect imperial pieces, but want to start with a gun I can shoot and not worry about authenticity or breaking a part.

I'm a bit confused by prices. I was thinking $400-$500 was fair for a non-collector's piece but was told elsewhere that $600 is about the lowest I could expect to pay. The FAQ here says they're valued at $350-$500. I live in Wyoming, and the dealers here want $700 and up for some rough pieces, since just finding a Luger here is tough. I've contacted a few online retailers and they do seem to start at around $600. What are the "real world" prices you guys are seeing? Where do you think I should go to get my first gun?

Any and all advice on this question, and anything else you think I should know would be much appreciated. Also see my post on the WTB forum if you're interested. Sorry for the long post, thanks for your time.

John, this is always interesting. I have been a Luger owner for over 25 years, but really got into "it" the last 4 years.

So, my point is this;

When I first came back from Europe (military stint for 7 years), there were still some East German and Russian reworks available for around $350, then prices started creeping up.

$600 seems like a norm, but you see prices every now and then for a 30 Luger (7.65mm) for less than $600, because they are much more expensive to shoot than a 9mm.

Keep your eyes open, and you will see some 9mm for $400 (I bought one last fall for $425 sight unseen, I was pleasantly surprised, it was a collector piece), you'll see some on the gun board auctions for less than $600 every now and then, I still think $450 to $500 is possible, but buying from a gun show or gun shop you will not usually find the low end price.

Be sure and ask Tom Heller (Lugerdoc) if he has anything in your price range...

A friend of mine just paid $625.00 at a local gun show for an all matching reblued, restrawed 9mm Luger, the gun looks OUTSTANDING and just needed a new mag.

I paid $379.00 for a mismatched 8" re-barreled Luger about two years ago at a local show.

There are deals out there if you just look long enough.

Gil Hoffman has a mismatched 9mm shooter for $625.00 on his website.
