Thank you all for your comments
Next time I notice an improper remark on the Forum, I will follow the the proceedures that John Sabato referred to for reporting it.
For the record, I am not Ukrainian. I am a sixth-generation American of Irish and German stock(both sides of the family). I hope that I did not offend anyone of Russian heritage - millions of good Russians also suffered under the brutal communist dictatorships of Lenin and Stalin. (If I offended supporters of brutal communist dictatorships - good!) For those interested in further information about the correct way to refer to Ukraine and the incorrect usage of the article "the" I recommend a good modern dictionary, the style books of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and the Financial Times of London along with modern documents from the US State Department, Harvard University and Oxford University. My Ukrainian friends do find it offensive to have their country defined as the "boonies" and "back woods" - these are not fitting descriptions of a proud people - a nation rich in literature, history, and culture - not unlike their Russian neighbor. In fact, my educated Russian friends share this view. MM

mm,
Taking umbrage at the terms "boonies" and "back woods" in reference to "the" Ukraine is, in my opinion, totally justified and I respect your indignation. But, attacking the use of the article "the" when it was not meant in any way to be offensive (in any language) in my opinion is over reaction of the highest degree. I would hope that such petty indiscretions can be overlooked in the future since it leads to the unfortunate comments in the thread that has been locked. As for myself, I will continue to refer to "the" Ukraine, just as I would refer to "the" USA, as it will be stated without any acrimony or bigotry intended. Respectfully, Ron wood

Wes,
Amen, brother. Too many *real* bad people with genuine hatred in their hearts and both the means and opportunity to do mischief out there for reasonable people to worry about semantic PC tom-foolery. Tom A. |
