I read the Sturgess reference, thanks Dwight.
I'd read the magazine chapter before too, but there is so much to remember.

What they said is that the mags with discs were made by DWM at Swiss request, so that it would be readily apparent that a magazine was inserted.

This would only be of interest to a range officer looking down a line of shooters, IMO.
In use a touch is sufficient.

Likewise, a dab of white or silver paint in a "normal" magazine would serve the same purpose.

When the Swiss set up and began their "own" production, they had decided to eliminate the disc, and did not produce magazines with the metal disc. Quite likely because it was not necessary in the first place, and did cost significantly more to produce.

More decorative than utilitarian, JMHO!

is/was there really a difference?
Or does this date to the 1900 model with the flat main spring vs.
later models with the coil spring?

Is/was the .30 stronger or weaker?

Many times when asked "we" say there is no difference in a 9 or .30/7,65 mag; and they are "interchangeable".

I think it is magazine spring tension, but!

Why did the marine have to teel 9mm mags from 7.65mm mags?
The Germans didnt adopt the 7.65mm in the first place and the marine only had mags for the 9mm.

There is a 1904 drawing of the coil spring 9mm luger with the concentric circles. Perhaps the navy simply followed the drawing. Makes one think if the rings are actually stylized coils

In East Germany the circles made a comeback. This time on the grips.
