Re: 41 bdf luger
Gary, Most Collectors don't believe Lugers were ever Nickled at the factory! Most are from GIs that had them done that way after the war, at least that is the general concensus I believe. and that would by byf not bdf? You have a flashy looking shooter grade Luger IMO Even with the numbers appearing sharp, it is not a factory gun! I rust blue Lugers and can keep the letters and stampings looking crisp if they are close to non pitted metal. The old bluing is removed by chemical process that leaves the base metal intact! Wish the news was better for you! The Nickel does protect it fairly well I would imagine. ~Thor~

Re: 41 bdf luger
Hey Ted,
IS there any way to chemically or electronically "de-chrome" these guns without hosing up the metal underneath? I keep running across some REALLY nice variants that would be great keepers if they hadn't made a trip to Bubba's Bumper Shop and Custom Chrome Emporium back in the late 40's... Tom |

Re: 41 bdf luger
Nearly all 41 byf (Mauser) lugers were military or police blue. If there were any presentation nickeled pieces I have not seen one I could be sure was genuine. There may have been a few made for special people but I have not seen one myself. The Kenyon book or other luger books might picture one. Nickeled lugers, on the other hand, are very common as GI's often nickeled or more often, chromed their luger. Does it have real ivory grips and engraving all over the pistol? Those features would support a nickeled luger for presentation.
Otherwise, I would think it is a standard military piece that was plated post-war. Fortunately, there are some talented folks who can refinish lugers in the original style. That will make it look more like it did when it was new. |

Removing nickel
Brownells sells chemicals for removing bluing & nickel plate without damaging the underlying metal. But you better know what you are doing when using them!

Re: Removing nickel
Okay, I will take a couple of nickeled Lugers off of everybody's hands. I prefer blued, but I'd take a shooter or two.
Just e-mail me and I'll come pick 'em up, ;>) Ed |
