General question about pairs of #-matching mags
I have a general question about finding out the value of a pair of #-matching Fxo magazines.
As an example, if one magazine # 1234a has a value of let's say $ 120.00 What would be the value of a pair with the exact same # like: 1234a plus 1234a + or 1234 1 plus 1234 2 Would it be just $120 x 2 = $240.00 or would it increase the value of this pair? What is the average value of a Haehnel fxo-marked police magazine in good condition? How rare are matching # pairs of mags? .

Hi Andy, Your hypothetical pair of matched magazines would be worth little more, if anything, than the value of the magazines individually. However, they would be worth a lot more to the owner of the matching gun. For example, I would happily pay $1,000.00, or more, for 9687b and 9687b+, to go with my near mint 1938 S/42. Regards, Norm

Norm, I mostly agree, but I think most collectors would pay a slight premium for 2 matched mags. Value would be more than $120, but of course it depends on condition of each magazine...

Also note that there is a link between the amount of money that collectors are willing to pay for matching rigs with 2 mags and the number of matching rigs that have appeared on the market as a result.
Faking these is about the easiest way to make a quick buck. Caveat Emptor as Tom A. used to say. |

Thank you Gentlemen for your advise so far.
I'm asking because I've bought a nice pair of E63 marked mags a few months ago and now I've got offered another nice pair of fxo marked mags. Well, I thought maybe this is a nice opportunity to get another pair of #-matching mags.

I think they are a neat curiosity, but without a matching pistol not very interesting or xtra valuable.

Can't read the numbers but they would appear to be worth a lot to a person who has the gun that matches. Would you sell them?

"magazines listing maching yor gun thread". 8551v and 8551v + Of course, they are for sale to the owner of this gun. About a year ago I saw a pair 3452o and 3452o + marked mags for sale, but I did not buy them. The seller asked about $250.00 for this pair of mags. I was hoping that matching-#-mags are more valuable than others and it would be a good idea to buy pairs of mags instead of single mags, if possible. There are alot of Luger mags for sale out there but not a lot of #-matching pairs. I thought "pairs" are very rare, or aren't they?

Most things in two are worth more, but two magazines, what does that get you? 2 mags that are the same with no pistol?
Now, 2 consecutive numbered lugers, that would be cool, and yet why? Many things we collect really have no basis in fact. Why is an erfurt with a wrong sideplate worth half what a erfurt with a matching sideplate or even more dramatic, a matching excellent erfurt isn't close to the value of a 80% Krieghoff? |

Ed,
How about this? I have pondered this questions and I think I have the answer. What if Lugers were not numbered as they are; for instance only a frame serial? No full serial anywhere else and no small parts numbered. Would Lugers be collectable at all? Would they be as desirable as they are now? I think there would be much less interest, but just the beauty and handling of the Luger makes it a desirable keep sake. Mike |

well, sure they would be, think of our 1911A1, that is exactly how they are numbered; then as a collector you have to figure out what parts make it correct.
Imagine lugers with no serial numbers and we'd still figure them out by stamps of acceptance or how the part was made? Ed |

I thought if I have to buy a set of magazines and there is a possibility to get a #-matching-pair, even if it does not mach the serial # of the gun, then I should go for the "pair" because to find a pair is more difficult as to find just 2 regular period matching mags. As you know, I have no original #-matching mags for my Luger. I had to buy a few mags from the period anyway to complete my rig as good as I can. (I've bought a correct period tool and holster, too). To buy a "pair" instead of two singles gave me a better "feeling". Gentlemen, what do you think? What would you prefer? GT made for me a wonderful set of 2 MecGar magazines with aluminium bottoms which he numberd, you remember the thread, I use them at the range and they are excellent. (Thanx again, GT !) But as my signature states, I'm still looking for the original #-matching mags and I'm hoping to find them someday.
