Shot my "new" Artillery Luger this morning - and a problem/question

Last week I bought the Artillery upper (receiver and barrel) from Don Voigt. Don shipped quickly and I was delighted to receive the package yesterday. I supplied the toggle assembly and frame from my mismatched 1918 Erfurt, added a little extra lubrication and was pleased that everything fit together fine.

I took the gun out today for our club's 25 yard "fun" match - 10 shots each of slow fire, timed and rapid fire. Not surprisingly, the gun shot about a foot high with the artillery rear sight all the way "down" at 100 yards, but here's where the problem came in - as I progressed through the magazine, the shots got higher and higher, and I discovered that under recoil the sight was slipping to higher and higher yardage settings.

Is it possible to get a stiffer spring for the rear sight adjustment - to prevent slippage? Or what would be another possible remedy? Would this situation improve or get worse with an artillery stock? I was shooting one handed, so the muzzle flip was fairly pronounced.

By the way, the gun cycled the 30 rounds perfectly with three different magazines (6 - 5 round strings) using two different reloads (4.1 grains of AA#2 and 5.3 grains of Unique, both under a 115 gr. plated round nose bullet). I'm very happy with the setup (assuming the sight issue can be fixed) and have a reproduction stock/holster on order.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I have at least two others that do the same thing; but didn't notice it with that one. I just push it back in place when I notice it slips up.

Send her back if you wish, not a problem. I don't remember there being any problem with the teeth or wear, the bbl is virtually new.

Jerry's, solution of use a small tie wrap will work, but not very elegant.

I'd try a stronger spring if it were here, or some "loctite" in the lower position(of course that would make the "adjustment" difficult).

Thanks Don, I have put a drop of blue Loctite on it and hopefully that will hold it. I'm really pleased with the way this looks and operates with my Erfurt frame and toggle, and am very much looking forward to getting a stock for it in a few weeks.

Sounds like a case of worn rear sight teeth to me... they aren't deep enough to hold the sight position during the recoil impulse... Just my educated guess... DAMHIK

No John, not worn teeth.

The barrel and rear sight are a "new" unit made by our friend Eugene the lugerman; which is not to say they are perfect- just not "worn".

SC, It's also possible that the "tooth" on the elevator push button has chipped off. i do have both new push buttons @$25 or whole slider (elevator) assys available @$75 = $5 S&H. TH

Congrats. These "artillery" Lugers are gobs of fun to shoot, aren't they.

Where did you buy your repo stock and holster? Link? I think I might need that for mine as well.

Good news at the range today... the drop of Blue Loctite on the rear site teeth did the trick with holding the setting at 100 yards under recoil. No problems with it moving forward at all. I shot it with the stock this time (the one I received a couple of weeks ago) and it worked great - no faults at all with 24 rounds (3x8) from MecGar magazines.

I would have shot the rig some more but I took my wife and daughter with me to practice with our home guns (S&W revolvers) and when it's time to go, IT'S TIME TO GO, especially when it's about 90 degrees and the afternoon sun is beating down.

The Artillery rig was a big hit with the Range Officers... not something even they see very often, I'm sure.

Another elegant solution to an aggravating problem, thanks for the confirmation.

Now, just get one of those "snail drums" and back to the range for some reactions for sure.
