New 41 "byf" Arrives

Well guys, after 2 1/2 years not buying a Luger, I picked up the 41 "byf" yesterday. It is stamped 41 with "byf", E/655 E/655, S/N 9322n. Blue is very close to 95-96% with most of the wear on the left sideplate and the left front muzzle. The front and rear gripstrap has some minor wear. Overall a very nice pistol.

Now I have a question......the S/N in the "n" block is an early "byf" stamp; probably in late February or early March 1941. On Jan Still's Forum, he is compiling data and here is a quote from the "Sticky": "There were only 20,000 lugers produced in the Ã¢??nÃ¢?Â and Ã¢??oÃ¢?Â blocks. If the 41 42code Luger production is increased in the Ã¢??nÃ¢?Â and Ã¢??oÃ¢?Â blocks, the 1940 42 code and 41 byf code will have to be proportionally decreased. I suspect that the production estimate of 20,000 41 42 code Lugers, ignored the overlap in serial ranges and simply assigned all the Ã¢??nÃ¢?Â and Ã¢??oÃ¢?Â production to the 41 42 code." With this information, this should make the "byf" in the "N" block fairly rare; is this a correct assumption? If my assumption is correct, would there be an increase in value over other suffix blocks?

I had to get out my books, I must be getting old as there were a LOT of things about Lugers I had forgotten, LOL. I will try to get some photos this afternoon to post on this thread. Thanks for the help guys!

Marvin, you are absolutely correct. The N-Block byf is very early, by a bunch. Would you mind taking a picture of the front of the frame showing the serial number and posting it? Thanks!

Yes, I plan to get some photos this afternoon when I return from Church service. I will definelty get some photos of the front frame.

After cleaning the pistol yesterday afternoon, I highlighted the numbers so they should show up well in a photo.

Perseverance pays off! Great photos. I am no Mauser expert, but to my eye the suffix is a "p" and not an "n". I'll let the guys that know what they are talking about step in and give you the official reading.

I'd say it is a P too, marvin see this chart I made a long time ago, needs to be updated,

Also, windows "resizer" works really well, you just right click on it and change it to small medium or large!

Ed, thanks for posting the link to the Chart. Your chart shows it much better than the one under "Technical information"

The wind is out of my sail, LOL. I thought I may have found a very good deal, but I have a decent one I guess. I am not hurt on cost as I bought it as a standard Luger anyway.

Nice Luger Marvin. Is it b black bakelite grips on it?
I have one quite close to yours.. BYF41 5299p

Morgan,

Yes, the grips are black phenolic and they really look good on the salt blued Lugers. I have a 1942 with black grips and thought it needed a 1941 to be its "stable mate", LOL. The Luger is in really nice condition with the blue wear on the left muzzle and side plate mostly. There are a few scratches on the front grip starp that appear to be from a ring, but don't know for sure.

Marvin, sure looks great.. You are lucky with honest wear only on the outside. My byf 41 has a very pitted barrel:\ good luck with it!
