Error in new Book
I've had my copy of the book "The P08 Luger Pistol" for a few days now and have browsed through it as time has permitted. On page 50 there is a statement that I believe to be incorrect. Paraphrased, it states that while Erfurt began each new year's production by returning to serial number 1, DWM continued production in sequence until the letter "z" was reached regardless of the year.
If the serial number data contained in Jan Still's "Imperial Lugers" is correct - and I believe it is - then the above statement is wrong. DWM did, in fact, revert to serial number 1 with the production of each new year. The only exception to this seems to be post-WW1 when BKIW, still using the DWM logo, began production of commercial Lugers using a military style system of serial numbering. These guns started in the "i" block and continued without a break through the years into the "u" block when all subsequent Luger production was by Mauser. Mauser seems to have finished the production of "u" block pistols and entered the "v" block as some Stoeger Lugers have serial numbers with a "v" suffix letter. However, in no case did DWM production ever reach the "z" block as the statement in "The P08 Luger Pistol" indicates. The BKIW - DWM pistols produced in the "i" - "u" block were sent to military and police units and to foreign military contracts as well as commercial sales. |
