Any info would help me.
My little brother inherited a Lugar from my grandfather who accuired it in WW2. I don't know much if anything about it other than the information my mom sent in this limited email. I have been asked by several members of my family to do a little research to find out perhaps a generalized value for insurance purposes and basic information for curiosity sake. I will have the ability to further inspect said Lugar 6 months from now when someone takes it back out of storage (its in another state) but until then I have a few pictures and the basics from moms email. I understand there is A LOT to valuing a Lugar, and the info I am giving is very vague, but ANY further information then what I have would be helpful to me. Thanks.
It’s a German Luger S/42- Serial No. 8586, Model 1937 w/ two magazines Serial No.8586 and holster. Captured from a German officer. |

Hello & welcome!
More close-up pics are needed; especially showing the frame serial #, the barrel serial #, the toggle, any markings/graphics on the frame & receiver, etc... Are all numbers matching? The majority of numbers will be the last two digits of the serial #... How is the bluing? Any wear or rust? What about the straw coloring (if any)? Pics of the magazine bottoms showing numbers, etc... Same number on takedown tool (that cross-shaped thingy)??? How does the bore look? Field strip & inspect wear of parts...do they match? Much more...Others will chime in shortly...

Hi Christina,
In order to place a fair value, we would need much closer and clearer photos of the sides, the top, the grip straps front and back, as well as all markings. That being said, 1937 S/42 Lugers are relatively common with an estimated production of 126,000. Over all condition can vary the value by hundreds of dollars. The letter "suffix" under the serial number on the front of the frame (below the barrel) would also have some bearing on value. Here is a link to an on-line dealer's site. Keep in mind that their prices reflect a premium and are slightly higher than most by 20-25%. The holster, if in good condition, will add $200-$300 to the value, possibly more as it looks to be in excellent condition. The two matching magazines, with the tool will bump the price considerably also. The 1937 in the link below is in average condition at 80%. http://www.simpsonltd.com/product_in...61b94136c5216d One more point. Lugers are also considered investments by many. The prices will rise and fall with the economy. You state that it is in "storage" for 6 months. Is it in a public storage unit? If so, and it is in the holster? It could be damaged by moisture (rust) over the Winter reducing the value by half or even more. It should be stored out of the holster, wiped down with a light coat of oil and stored in a warm dry place, including the magazines and tool. Ron
