Post war East German manufactured Lugers!

Hi Folks!

It appears that there may have been a small number of new production Lugers, manufactured in East Germany between 1953 and 1957, at the Haenel Werk (which would become a part of the Ernst Thalmann Werk). IÃ¢??m working on obtaining more information....

Kyrie, If you're speaking of the 150 new production EG made PO8s without midtoggle markings, stock lug or lanyard loop, these are pretty rare items here in the US and are generally selling in the $1500 range. Tom

I honestly donÃ¢??t know what IÃ¢??m talking about just yet ;-)

These were the few Lugers made at the Haenel Werk, sometime between 1952 and 1957. Production was contemporary with the Ã¢??1001-0Ã¢?Â and fill in the cartridge Walther PP production. IÃ¢??m attempting to find markings, serial number range, and so on. Does this sound like the Lugers you referenced?

These seem to be like (in terms of rarity) the first post war P.38Ã¢??s - those made with steel frames - before the Federal German Army insisted on an alloy frame.

Hi Folks!

Here is what IÃ¢??ve learned so far, courtesy of a German friend and fellow collector.

Some small (unknown) number of Lugers were produced in East Germany as part of a gunsmithing program in one of the State run gunsmith schools. These were completely new production, and used no existing Luger parts. The only markings were East German commercial proofs (which look like pre-war German proofs) and serial numbers, which were longer than four digits. The size of the numbers larger than we normally see on Lugers - about four mm.

This is very interesting news. Tom H & Kyrie... I had not even heard rumors about this before... Please keep this thread alive with whatever you find out.

Does this mean that there may be a NEW set of blueprints out there in the former EG? Perhaps this is something that one of our German members might be able to research?

The EG Luger I have has an EG frame and some small parts are Early Nazi. It was made in 1953 (June)

I think that would be a treat to those of us that have never seen one. How well are these frames finished? I understand that the EG's did excellent work on guns, especially their version of the Makarov...

I have an E. German Mag, and I tried to put a ww2 bakelite bottom on it. The mag catch comes up short. This looks good, but is not functional. Does anyone know how to fix this without using the dremel tool?

G.W., You might give GT a try as he is a mag specialist and forum member...Look in the profile section or some such for his Email. I am just getting used to this new forum and do not have his Email address handy.

John; I am not able to post pictures, but the workmanship on the EG Luger I have is CRUDE compared to the prewar and wartime Lugers. (including Erfurts)
