An Old Salt Navy '06

On a previous thread LugerVern requested pictures of navies that were not in "pristine" condition, just genuine '06 Lugers.

This is a "First Issued Altered" Navy that I purchased from the sister of a USN officer that picked it up "somewhere" in a German navy yard.in 1945. It has a fairly common unit mark on the rear grip strap. This weapon has seen a lot of service in both World Wars. The Luger came in a "First Variation" Navy holster that had belt straps retrofitted in early 1917. The holster unfortunatly is in rather poor shape.

Unit marks on the rear of the grip strap.

Original unit mark: W.W.3792 which is partically under the grip safety.

Replaced unit mark: II.T.D.2541

Both of these units were stationed at Wilhelmshaven

Navy proofed, but not numbered sheet metal mag. Looks sort of blued in this photo, but that was caused by the lighting and the camera flash.

Finally a breath of fresh air!

Nice Navy!

We can learn a lot form the study of it. I hope you are starting a trend in posting your gun.

In your mind, do you think your gun has any major issues? What I am after here is if a new collector used your gun as a reference is there anything that might be misleading to them?

There are no major issues with this pistol. All the numbered parts are matching, it has a very good bore and it works. There is some pitting and loss of blueing. Only about 30% of the straw remains.

The two unit marks are from the same North Sea Fleet, so it stayed in the same area during it's Imperial career.

It is a well used gun that has been in two wars. There was an E/63 proofed Mauser mag [different serial number] in it when I bought it from the vet's sister, so that might have been considered an upgrade during WW II.

No we're just all cranky because we can't find one , and when we do , we can't afford it . so we just ignore em !

tell you what , the navy would have to be my pick of the lugers . I like the extra barrel length and improved sights . If I can't find one I will just have to build one out of bits and pieces . anybody know where I might find the parts ?
