Default luftwaffe erfurt

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=42405631

This story is plausible, except for a few things...

What kind is the dagger? It is in good shape, so did bob smoh take this poor erfurt with him deer hunting as often as RK goes out?

I don't think I have ever seen toggles so worn?

Haha, Good story....

I can't imagine a WW2 Luftwaffe pilot going down wearing his dress dagger and a battered old Erfurt.

He was probably shot down during the battle of Britain in his Fokker triplane

I think I detect a hint of skepticism here

Ed,
The dagger is a first model Luftwaffe and the maker is Alcoso. This model Luft was standard until about 1938 when a second and cheaper model that more resembles the Army dagger became available. The scabbard was covered in blue leather that would have rotted and have been long gone by the time this so called "discovery" was made.

The hallmark on this dagger appears to have been pantographed. Would this have been the normal method of application?

Dwight,
As I understand it, there were two methods used to imprint the manufacturers logos and inscriptions on these blades; the first being to imprint the logo using a die under heavy pressure or secondly to acid etch through a template.

Red face

Ed,
I'm Fully Convvinced that this Erfurt was artifically Antiqued overnight in a cement mixer with a bucket of gravel, Such a pity it was once a beautiful side arm.
