Default Spectacular Luger Cover

Here's a piece of fine Luger collector publicity which cannot go unreported and uncomplimented. It's the cover of our current Ohio Gun Collectors Association (OGCA) Newsletter, just received yesterday; transparent 7.65mm Swiss Luger on which, sadly, I cannot quite read the cartridge headstamps .

It leads to an equally professional and colorful two-page summary of the Luger story by John Eckert. John credits a number of people who helped with the article, adding, "Special thanks to Ron Wood whose help made this cover possible"

Outstanding job indeed, Ron. This may be one of the prettiest OGCA Newsletter covers I've seen, which is saying a lot. The newsletter is coffee table quality, every issue. It is one of the things you just don't throw away. And OGCA is, if I am not mistaken, the largest and most reputable collector group in the world.

Anybody within driving range should be a member. Top gun people from all over the country attend each show, so it's a great place to exchange thoughts (and guns) with serious collectors. I know a number of you also belong. Takes two members to sign your application, and we have no shortage of potential signers from this board.

I was very grateful to John for his acknowledgement, but the real credit needs to go to the outstanding original artwork by David Kimble. David is a premier illustrator and most of you will be familiar with his sectional views of exotic high performance autos featured in “Road and Track” and other car enthusiast publications. The Luger illustration was featured on the cover of the July 1989 issue of “Guns & Ammo”. David not only created the cover art, he also wrote an excellent 8-page article “Old Model Lugers – The Genesis of a Legend” that showcased some of the finest early Lugers.

I have kept in contact with David over the years, so when John explained his desire to use that illustration for the cover of the handout brochure of his fabulous stocked Luger display (sponsored by the Ohio Gun Collectors Association) at the last NRA Convention in Phoenix , I contacted David and received his gracious and willing approval for its use.

I have a beautiful 11”X14” signed original print of that illustration that David presented to me. But I couldn’t quite come up with an efficient method to reduce it to useable size for the brochure. So I ended up making a copy of the magazine cover and re-touching out all the text on the cover. It took a couple of hours of squinting at my computer screen but John was happy with the result and I managed not to deface David’s great artwork.

By the way, the headstamp is DWM KK 471

"Are copies for sale?"

Ron, that sounds like a good fundraiser idea to me!

Frameable color prints with the proceeds going to the Lugerforum maintenance fund ... You could sell a bunch of them at $25.00 each plus shipping ...but then what do I know?

Jerry,

I don't believe the newsletter is normally sold, but since thousands are printed and it was sent out only days ago, I would guess they may have extra copies. Contact info for the association is:

OGCA P.O. Box 670406
Sagamore Hills, OH 44067-0406
Laura Knotts, Business Mgr.
PH: (330) 467-5733
Fax: (330) 467-5793
E-mail: ogca@ogca.com
Web: www.ogca.com

Ron,

John had his stocked Luger display at an OGCA meet earlier this year, I believe. I had to just stop and stare for awhile. There were things I never knew existed. That's quite a lifetime accomplishment.

Not yet having assimilated all the names of who is who in Lugerland, I did not realize that the man with the stock display was the man who wrote the newsletter article.

Well, O.K., I guess I'd better scan and post that also, in case anybody wants to print it out. It's a keeper.

John,
The frameable color prints with proceeds going to the Lugerforum sounds like an attractive idea, but it isn't something that should be pursued. I obtained David Kimble's permission to use his artwork on John Eckert's brochure. The use of the same illustration by OGCA for their newsletter is a bit of a stretch of that permission. Any additional use of Kimble's copyrighted illustration needs to again obtain his permission and he should rightfully receive some compensation from any proceeds of its sale. A one-time permission as a favor does not transfer into open ended commercial use.

If there is sufficient interest in copies of this artwork, I could approach David Kimble to see if he would be interested in participating.

John,
I think you were posting while I added the afterthought of working with David Kimble. As I said, if there is sufficient interest, it might be something that could be done.

Well, I believe that this discussion has run it up the flagpole... let's see what kind of interest it generates for frameable prints and we will know whether or not to pursue it. It could be a limited edition signed print, eh?

How many members would be interested in buying one of these frameable prints to hang in their gun room? Mind you, this is not a solicitation for orders, only an inquiry as to member interest.

Let's hear from you all who would want one...(Note: "you all" is a southern USA vernacular expression believed to mean "everyone" )

I would be in as well and long as the size was not huge. I have limited space.
Could we maybe offer to donate the artist's portion to a charity of his choice in his name?

David Zimmerman was kind enough to send me his original copy of the Ohio Gun Collectors magazine and for that I thank him very much!

It is truely a spectacular Artist's rendering..very detailed and colorful. A lot of work went into this.

Thanks to all for this..whatever comes of it.
