Gunsmith(s)

Good afternoon, all!!!!

A close friend has several Lugers and one is in need of some attention from a GOOD Luger 'smith.

Can anyone recommend a GOOD one?
Any/all help is appreciated.

My friend is in Southern Maryland, but, he is willing to travel to the gunsmith.

A couple of our members are really good, Thor (Ted Green), Lugerdoc (Tom Heller) and Hugh. Not in Maryland but he could ship them...

Whats the problem? Maybe he does not need a gunsmith. A lot of people are on this forum who can maybe advise your friend on how he can fix it himself. Sometimes the problem is a simple one.

Norm is absolutely correct. Depending on what the problem is, it is possible that it might be an assembly problem or maybe just require the replacement of an out of spec part. Rarely is a gunsmith required if you or you friend are handy with common hand tools...

I am in the Northern VA area and could help if we can't fix it with advice.

Please tell us about the problems...

From what my friend is telling me, he is having a problem with failure to feed / jams.

He has switched to a different magazine, thinking 'weak mag spring' and the pistol is impeccably clean. Still, feed problems.

He 'thinks' that it might be a recoil spring problem.

The pistol extracts and ejects the fired case normally and shoots very tight groups, otherwise.

I will speak to him this weekend, and will check back.

I agree that the recoil spring may be part of the problem... and it could also be the ammunition he is using as well...

First try the bulk box of Winchester 115 grain 9mm sold at wal-mart's for about $11.00 a hundred. We have a lot of good reports on this ammo and Lugers.

make sure the pistol's moving parts are generously lubricated but not overly so (use breakfree) and definitely no lube in the chamber ...

As much as I hate to admit it, some of the best 9mm I've come across lately is Norinco. I bought 500 rounds on gunsamerica.com awhile back because it was cheap. It's 124 grain fmj and shots fine in every 9mm I own including a Bolo converted to 9mm from 7.63. I think the price on the last batch was $32.00 incl s&h for 250 rounds. It's brass case and Boxer primed.

Here is what I have learned about the problem.
1. Ammunition used is Winchester ammo. No problems found until recently. (See original post.)

2. Lube used on Luger(s) is Miltech. One drop on each point that requires lubrication. (My friend says he has better success with Miltech vs. BreakFree.)

3. Recoil spring APPEARS to be the culprit.
My friend ordered two from SARCO last night. I believe he told me that the recoil springs are about $10.00 apiece.

I will update when I have more information.
