I think so, I talked to him about a year ago. His name is Romo and his phone number is 713 305-8540. He is in or near Houston.

As RGarrett mentions above, at last report, the Stainless Steel Lugers are still being produced in Houston TX... but they are no longer associated with Stoeger. The name of the company that makes them at last report is Orimar.

When I spoke with Mr. Romo in March he was still producing a limited quantity of lugers. They cost $695 brand new in the box.

I spoke to Mr. Romo on 10/25/06 at his number 713-305-8540. He told me he is not producing any Lugers right now but plans on starting production back up in 3 or 4 months. He asked me to call back in 3 or 4 weeks for an update if I want.

I am new to Luger collecting and have started buying books, beginning with Lugers at Random. I would like to buy a shooter to learn more about the pistol by breaking it down and firing it, but find myself in a dilemma. I thought about buying one of the Orimar s.s. Lugers from Mr. Romo, but have seen some negative comments about them. Are the Orimar guns relatively reliable if you figure out the right ammo to use?

I spoke with Ralph Shattuck at the Tulsa Gun Show recently who told me to stay away from a shooter and get an "entry level" matching gun (which he said through him would cost $1395.00 or more) . He said to do that and feel free to fire some rounds through it (I know that makes many of you cringe at the thought-and me too!). I saw a few overpriced nonmatching shooters at the gun show.

Can I get some learned advice on the best way to go? I would feel best to get a new one from Orimar when they again start up production and just shoot the fire out of it without worry. Could I do that with a nonmatching shooter and be okay? Where would I go to find a reasonably priced, decent nonmatching shooter that wouldn't blow up in my hand?

Chris,

If your intent is truly to buy a Luger you can shoot and study, by all means buy a shooting quality--mismatched, reblued, whatever--Luger. An "entry-level" (whatever exactly that means?) matching gun can, by careful shopping and paying attention, can be had for less than Ralph's quotation.

$1,400 or more for a Luger is in the realm of a collection quality gun, and you are rightly horrified at the thought of shooting such a Luger. The advice to do so is at the least, ill-considered.

Shooting a non-matching or other shooting quality Luger can be perfectly fine--there are those of us here who do it all the time. As far as where to go to get one, post a request in the "wanted to buy" Forum here (along with your projected budget) and see what comes out of the woodwork.

Good luck, and good shooting.

Chris, Good advise above. If you purchase an original mismatched or reblued shooter, you will learn more about function, collecting and have an easier time finding spare parts, should you need them, than with one of the new overpriced stainless lugers. This is not an insignificant factor, as you would be surprised how many "gunshow bargain" shooter I get for repair, when they fail to function correctly. Even most large dealers, don't warantee their "shooters" to function correctly. I just picked up 3 of them at a local gun show last weekend, and have already spent a couple of hours on each getting it up to specifions. Now I need to test fire them, to see if they actually will work reliably, before selling them. TH

I certainly appreciate the advice and will keep in mind there is a "Luger Doc" out there should I have any problems. Thanks!

You might consider one of the Mauser re-intros. They are seen on the market from time to time. Probably around $1200 for an unfired one with all accessories, $900 or so for a used one in top notch condition with all accessories. The Swiss pattern framed ones will go for a tad less than the German pattern framed ones.

Lugerdoc,

Do you guarantee your shooters to consistently function properly?

How much do you usually get for a shooter like the three that you will be selling soon? My brother in law may be looking for a shooter luger.

Thanks,
Chris
