bob, welcome to the forum,
It is what is called a model 1900, it has an ideal stock and grips and those are worth a grand or more by themselves. Dwight collects info on early lugers, there is a huge database here on the forum; you can find it by looking in the archive area. He would like full serial number, any proof marks on it, caliber, etc. database: http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthre...threadid=16979 Info on early lugers: http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthre...780#post129780 Is the area under the safety blued or in the white? No offense, but it might be a bit too nice looking for a gun that is 100 years old. Maybe some close ups of the top, right side, etc? Ed

Bob -- How much this rig cost you 35 years ago? TIA
==== I saw a smiliar one in a gun show recently. Carried by a C&R dealer. The rig is very expansive nowadays, tag price $9k (!) if I remembered correctly. |

The mags may also be valuable . Can you provide pictures of the bottoms? Ken D |

Your Ideal stock/holster is in much better than average condition. The leather on most examples is pretty tired. It obviously has been well cared for, and apparently the Luger also as it looks to be in superior condition.
The Ideal holster and grips were originally manufactured in Ohio and operations later moved to California. It was patented in 1904, but all of the examples I have seen are marked "Patents Pending". Surviving examples are fairly scarce and in the conditon of yours will command a price well in excess of $2000.

Not that you should shoot this, but the mags don't matter, the 9mm and the 7.65mm (30 luger) use the same magazine.

BB, Very nice example of a late production M1900 AE luger. For anyone needing similar Ideal GRIPS, I have some listed in the For Sale section. Sorry no stocks for sale. TH

Bob,
That is a very nice Luger and very desirable. Very good to know it is in good hands where it will receive proper care and preservation. Here is a link to: "Luger Appraisal/Authentication Service" on Simpson's site. http://www.simpsonltd.com/luger_appr...c5c8bbb5d5b372 |

Since you are asking for advice and/or opinions, I am going to give you mine. This is a very valuable gun with the accessories that go with it. I would not be in a big rush to sell it, until you find out a lot more about it, as you are now doing. I think it helps to think of "value" in terms of wholesale and retail value. Naturally, collectors will want to try to purchase a high end collectable such as this at a lower price. And naturally a dealer, such as Simpson Ltd. will want to charge a higher or retail price when they sell it, and a lower retail price when they buy it. The challenge is to find out what these low and high prices are for something like this. And the higher the value, the fewer people there will be who will be able to actually afford it, or who will be willing to pay that higher or retail price. In the end it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. But I think all of us will tell you that it is a very valuable rig. Mauser720 - Ron |

I also agree with MaUSER 720. I paid over $5000 for my AE Model 1900 rig with Ideal grips about 2 years ago. I thought that was a good deal. Unless you need the money OR have no interest in this gun, keep it....it is a very nice set, as people here on the site have told you. If you do decide to sell it, post it here on the website first and let knowledgeable collectors have a chance at it. If you sell it to a retailer (Simpson, etc), yu will NOT be getting its true value. If it was mine, I would just keep it and watch the value increase.
