Jan,

Actually the frame and 1938-dated receiver DO match. The number 7692 appears on the left side of the receiver just above the thumb latch. The same number 7692 also appears on the front of the frame below the barrel. There is no letter with either number. Neither number is struck over or ground off. Both pieces show field use.

The sideplate, toggle and toggle-link are the mismatched parts: Toggle link is marked "S/42" BUT with a Fraktur style "S" which I take to be a 1934 part. The toggle & link assembly appear to be a brand-new condition unit based on their identical color and like-new satiny finish.

Can you tell me this about my gun: Because the mismatched Mauser coded toggle-assembly appears to be a 1934(?) part and NOT original to the 1938 receiver and frame, could the 1938 dated receiver and frame be any other manufacturer BESIDES Mauser?

If so, what other manufacturer could such a 1938-dated Luger with no other marking outside of proof stamps be?

Thanks!

Thanks for the information.

Your 1938 dated Luger is a partly mismatched Vopo rework(these Lugers are sometimes re-manufactured from mismatched parts). My experience with reworks is that mismatched parts can be made to match. Sometimes the serial number on the front of the frame will be machined off and matched by applying newly stamped letters. Sometimes such a reworked/reserialed frame can be difficult to detect. Such an example is shown on page 114 of Weimar Lugers.

The research at hand concerns the acceptance stamps and serial numbers found on 1937 and 1938 dated Lugers applied during the manufacturing/proofing process. In my opinion, it is best to leave out reworked Lugers, to avoid possible mistakes.

Jan,

You know your stuff!

I went back and dismantled my Luger and took a closer look at the number on the frame. Sure enough, it does look ground off there and with a magnifying glass I can detect 2 faint numbers behind the "7692." So this Luger appears to be more of parts gun than I thought.

Am I correct to think the Fraktur "S" S/42 toggle assembly makes that a 1934-only part?

The stamping on the receiver looks original, but who knows!

Yes, a VOPO gun. From somebody elses post I think it has the Neu Brandenburg VOPO sunburst marking and district number. Also shows the capture "X".

This gun must have had an interesting history -- or "guns" in this instance.

Thanks!

Jan,

This is a late reaction, but my job kept me away from my Luger for more then a full month...

Before I go to the basement with a magnifying glass and a torch, I would like to know if you want data from all the 1937 dated Lugers. Apart from 2 S/42 I also have:
Krieghoff (1),
Latvian contract v suffix (5)
Commercial (2) v suffix.

The 4 1938 dated I have are all S/42 stamped.

As soon as you tell me what to look for, and what not, I will do the job and let you know the results shortly.

Best regards,

Jan,
All matching 1937 S/42 Sn: 3997 (suffix is either a "Z" or "Y"-there was a thread with this debate a few months ago on my Luger where most think it is a "Z". Due to the gothic script, it's hard to read).

-Straight Wing 63
-Drooped Wing 63
-(next bird is the typical one: like John Sabato's '37 S/42 sn:8091a MTP????)

Default Mid Test Proof ?

What does a Mid Test proof look like and where is it located on the 1938 S/42?
