One final question, is this a shooter or should I keep it safe in the safe?

Most definitely a collectable, not a shooter. Your gun has a clear, documentable history and it would be a shame to lessen that via a broken part.
Since this one was a freebie I would keep this in a safe and invest $700 or so in a nice shooter for range and plinking. |

Is the pistol valuable enough I should add an insurance rider? If so, what are you thinking? I really have no idea about monetary values, but as I explore this sight I am learning that these are valuable not just historically but also monetarily. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
