Alf,
It is difficult to tell from the photos, but I see some indication it is not. I would need gun in hand to give a better assessment. Ron

Ron, of course, gives the best answer here pertaining to the luger in question. I feel that after reading Goertz & Sturgess's volume II, reading and participating in the mega Forum discussion, that the 1906 luger with crossed rifles on the chamber is indeed a genuine production luger that emanated from the DWM factory with some confused markings on it that may have well even confused the "brains" at DWM. Whether this luger was destined for the Russian military officer as a private purchase or rather to some Bulgarian military unit is where the confusion and debate arises. Of course this will never be finally settled as no actual factory or sales records exist. Read it all and make your own clonclusions.

I received my full-color catalogue for this auction a couple weeks ago and just got around to reviewing it. There is an example of almost every "test" Luger - American, Peruvian, Venezualian, Japanese Navy, Russian etc. etc. plus an A&F. Almost every one of them says "Excellent as refinished/restored" or "with evidence of touch up" or "with evidence of added finish". In addition, many others look to good to be true for uncommon variants. This is quite disturbing indeed. A couple of pieces strongly pique my interest, such as the AE Test with the holster and the cased 1906 commercial with the english distributor marked barrel, but I am going to stay away from this one.

I was looking at the auction catalog as well and noticed the same thing. My take on any test weapon is that you beat it to death. That way, you see how it performs under different severe conditions. The term "test luger" and excellent original condition does not correlate to me. To bad they are not selling the ultra rare "Djibouti test luger". I would be bidding big! Bob
