Holy Smokes! I have been away from computers for a while and was not expecting all this. I'll have to read this through a few times and put my questions up after I think on it some, thanks for all the input.
I do already have a 1911 in 9mm,a rock island. No show piece to be certain, but the price was right, its cheap to shoot, and even cheaper with cast reloads, and low down dirt cheap with a marvel type 22 conversion. I figure it would be something to learn and work on. With that in mind, so far so good. On to the 30 project; The official rock island service/parts page has replacement 9mm barrels right around $50. How much fitting those would take, I would guess not much to get to the factory level of assembly. I figure get a new barrel to fit and work as well as the one in the gun now, then proceed with the project. And on the ammo front, I have nearly assembled all the tools I need to turn 223 brass to 30 luger brass. I bet few people know that redding cutter heads fit rcbs cutters, and fewer still know that a forster inside reamer (the only inside reamers available as far as I know) will fit the correct redding cutter head. I still need the shell holder plate, but then my rcbs-redding-forster trimmer-reamer will be complete. I even picked up some bullets this weekend, berry 71 gr .312. Barrel measures 310, and the bearing surface is really small, so I think they will work out, if not I have some other ideas for them. |

Oh! The X with a circle!!! *.050" min - .070" max*??? They're showing that as inclusive of the rim...Which is .039" to .050"...so headspace would actually be .011" to .020"...As I read their document... That's more like it... The Colt Gov't Model does not index on the rim...The barrel hood would interfere...If you check my pics, you'll notice I cut the chamber before milling the liner away around the hood...because I knew that would knock the reamer off center if I cut the liner away first... If I'm reading the 7.65 Luger PDF correctly, that headspace is .007" - .010"...

The procedure I outlined in my other thread is just one way to do it...I'm used to that way from my C96 Mauser re-barrels. Silver soldering a straight or even a stepped liner in is another way, but I'm not familiar with that...Not too much anyway...

Oh Lord, something else for me get interested in. I am sooo weak when it comes to this type of thing. So far, I don't own a Govt. size 1911 in 9mm/38Super. I am more interested in a Commander size 9mm. After a 15 months wait, and more than a couple of phone calls, I received my BarSto barrels in 30 Luger for a Browning Hi Power and a Colt Detective originally in 40 S&W. It was worth the wait, just to get them. I have fitted the new barrel to the BHP, and finally found the correct recoil spring rate for reliable function with both 85gr FMJ, and 93gr FMJ. What a kick, and scary accurate. I plan to start on the Colt Detective project next, and hopefully get it up and running soon. Wish me luck!! Obviously, I reload for the 30 Luger cartridge, and can afford to shoot it all that I want. |

My guess is that if you have the barrel and magazine in hand you are going to find you need a new recoil spring. I say this because I have a Ruger P89 in 7.65 Parabellum. This is a factory jssue pistol and has a different recoil spring than the 9 mm. Even so, it does not cycle in a very enthusiastic msnner even though it has never failed to cycle.

I bought a 1911 Colt 30 Luger bbl off ebay way back before they banned gun stuff. I cut it to Commander length, and assembled a 3 caliber Commander; 38 Super, 9mm, & 30 Luger:

Hugh,
That's way cool! I seem to remember that Colt made the Series 70 LW Commander in .30 Luger for sale in Italy in the '70's. I think they only made 700 or so. I saw one on RIA that went for $3500.00. Mike

Hi,
I hope it's OK to add to a post that's been dormant for a while. There's a gunsmith I know who was actively pursuing 30 Luger in the 1911, specifically for use in NRA Bullseye competition. He got Bar-Sto to make him a few barrels. He is also a Master ranked shooter. I shot with him many times and witnessed some very impressive scores, especially on the 50 yd. slow fire course. If I recall correctly, he used a cast bullet hand load. I did try his pistol myself and can say the recoil and muzzle blast were quite mild. Anyhow, the guy's name is Dave Salyer. He's on the various Bullseye forums and sites such as: http://www.bullseyepistol.com http://www.bullseyeforum.net Best Regards, Jim |
