Richard, take some pictures and start a new thread. Then we will be able to help you out. And regardless, I can assure that you don't have "just another gun", you have your grandpa's Luger.

It appears to be a very late war Mauser-brand P08, one that was probably unissued or certainly saw little battle time. Holsters and "bring-back" authorization papers do help the value of the gun quite a bit. Can't tell if it is all matching but I'll gues that it is. You alluded to value, so I'll roll the dice. IF it matches, has the correct magazine, if the holster is the correct holster appropriate to the year and condition, and if Grandma can find the papers, I'd ball-park if at a bit over $2k. Now more photos and info. may change that guesstimate, but that is my $.02 worth.
Now we'll see what the others have to say.
Welcome, and that is a very nice legacy that you have been granted temporary custody of. Is there a story to go along with it?

David
Very nice luger!
Thank you for sharing.
Did anyone tell you the holster you have pictured is a WW2 US Army model issued for the 1911A1?
Definitely not original issue for a German luger.

John, thanks for the data. Your Luger, 42 byf, S/N 966d was completed about February 1942.

Hi Craig, thanks for the data on your 42 byf!

Serial Number 1985g was completed about April 1942. Other than that, not much more information is available.

Mountie, please provide a picture of the frame front showing the serial number. I don't understand your description.
